Thousands of undocumented immigrants have until Saturday to apply under a 1986 program that may never be repeated.
Almost 20 years have passed since Congress approved an amnesty for nearly 3 million immigrants living illegally in the United States, but for perhaps as many as 100,000 undocumented residents, the door is still open.
It closes Saturday.
With the final deadline approaching, lawyers are reaching out to those immigrants who may still be eligible for green cards under the 1986 amnesty program.

It wasn't amnesty, it was the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA). It was billed as comprehensive reform, and they were really going to get tough on the border and on employers, yessir.

I'm certainly happy that someone remembers the rhetoric that accompanied the passage of that bill! The amnesty part of it was hugely unpopular, but we were assured it was the last time it would be offered and after that the borders would be closed and sealed. Like so many other promises government makes, it just never came to be. We're in worse shape, much worse shape, now that we were in those days. And here we are, once again, talking about the necessity of offering amnesty in order to regain control of immigration into our country. Thanks for the reminder!

Groups that work against illegal immigration see the new deadline as yet more evidence of the weakness of U.S. immigration laws. The fact that immigrants can still apply for legal residency under the 1986 law should discourage legislators from passing a new amnesty or guest worker program, he said, adding that "we'll be litigating this one into the 22nd century."

Hopefully the House GOP can stop our Stammerer-in-Chief's assault on America. If they can't (or won't), they should start looking for new jobs.
