It wasn't amnesty, it was the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA). It was billed as comprehensive reform, and they were really going to get tough on the border and on employers, yessir.

I'm certainly happy that someone remembers the rhetoric that accompanied the passage of that bill! The amnesty part of it was hugely unpopular, but we were assured it was the last time it would be offered and after that the borders would be closed and sealed. Like so many other promises government makes, it just never came to be. We're in worse shape, much worse shape, now that we were in those days. And here we are, once again, talking about the necessity of offering amnesty in order to regain control of immigration into our country. Thanks for the reminder!
