David Parker, at odds with his community
Boston Globe ^ | December 22, 2005 | Tania Ralli

David Parker says the past year has made him think more than ever about what it means to be a good father. He wants what's best for his two young sons, but it has put him at odds with the community in which he lives. ''We have to know what other adults are saying to our children," Parker said during a recent interview in his Lexington home. He and his wife, Tonia, felt their son's school was not upfront about presenting topics that the Parkers deem contentious in his kindergarten classroom. In January, their youngest son brought home a "diversity book bag," which included a book depicting same-sex couples. The Parkers said they never received two school notices about the bag, which also included puppets and recipes for ethnic dishes. The Parkers said that according to their Christian beliefs, homosexuality is a sin. They support teaching their children tolerance for all people, but they said topics like homosexuality are too confusing to explain to young children. ''You would think from some media accounts that, when I saw the book, I ran out of the house with my hair on fire. It isn't about a book," Parker said. ''It's about the school taking the position that they're not going to give us information that we need to guide our child through controversial and debatable social issues." During an April meeting at the school, during which Parker hoped to opt his son out of discussions about families with same-sex parents, he was arrested for trespassing. Parker refused to leave until school officials made assurances that they would comply with his wishes. Officials did not agree to pull the child out of class discussions deemed inappropriate by the Parkers. ''When it comes to my children and the discussion of these topics,

Surely it isn't. That's just me hijacking a thread. Nevermind.

"And it's by no means over."

Yes it is Mr. Parker. Smell the coffee while you still have a kitchen. You keep fighting for your rights in Massachusetts, you may lose your rights, your home, your family, your livelihood, your freedom, and your life. Get out of there while you still have everything but that one tail feather they bit off.

Now let me be. I have Boomer Bummer #59: just heard Lesley Gore is turning 60 and she's a lesbian. :(

This article is pretty one sided. In the interest of "fair and balanced," I'd like to hear the other side's story

Well I would be happy to give the other side, but as earlier threads on this topic will tell you, either you concede that Parker is a hero or you are condemned as a deviate. David Parker is no hero and earlier threads reflected the lies told about the episode. He used his children as pawns in his political game, and made demands that could not have been met by any school. BTW, I thought it was against this forum's policy to have a member do fundraising on his own behalf?

And??

This was the first thread I read about Parker.

And??

Wasn't referring to you upchuck. There are a number of threads on this dating back several months. I question those who link to a fundraiser for legal expenses incurred by anyone who starts the fracas and causes the legal expenses and then goes on a thread to keep the issue alive, even though charges were dropped.

As`for me, I can agree with the goal of MR. Parker but completely disagree with his tactics. They were unnecessary, deceitful, selfish, and a complete disservice to his children. If you are interested look up keyword Lexington or Parker, I believe for other threads.

What makes you think that "lexfreedom" is David Parker? I don't think he even knows this forum exists. But rest assured there are plenty of people in Lexington that support David Parker and know the truth about what really happened. What he requested was well within his rights as a parent and could easily have been accommodated by the school.

What "lies" are you referring to? Or are you just a troll from "lexingtoncares"?

Have it your way. But since you are either him or know him personally, for you to say he doesn't even know this forum exists when you are doing a fundraising for him pretty much speaks for your credibility, doesn't it?

What he requested was well within his rights as a parent and could easily have been accommodated by the school.

He and the school could easily have been accomodated with their original offer, but what "he" wanted was publicity, not accomodation, and his children were simply pawns in that publicity scheme.

If you want to know what lies I am referring to, go back to earlier threads on this topic, and I have never heard of lexintoncares, but will check it out, thanks.
