Eighty percent of the respondents to a Dallas Business Journal online poll about the Wright Amendment said the amendment should remain in place with 19 percent saying it should be repealed. The remainder of respondents were undecided.
More than 9,400 people responded to the unscientific poll, which ran on the DBJ Web site, dallas.bizjournals.com, from Dec. 5 to Dec. 18.
The Wright Amendment, passed in 1979, is a federal law that limits long-haul flights from Dallas Love Field, home of discount carrier Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV - News), which is trying to get the law repealed.
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and its main tenant, American Airlines, favor keeping Wright in place to protect D/FW's economic viability.
Nearly 25 percent of the poll's responses came from an Internet Protocol address assigned to American Airlines. Of those, 2,296 votes were in favor of keeping the amendment in place, and 26 wanted to repeal it. A majority of the American votes were tallied on a single day, Dec. 6, the second day of the poll, according to polling data.
In addition, 133 votes, or 1.4 percent of the total votes came from an IP address assigned to the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport Board with all but three seeking to keep the amendment in place.
Less than 1 percent of the votes came from IP addresses assigned to Southwest Airlines. Of those, 96 percent favored repeal.
Time to move on, and let people FLY, anywhere, anytime.
Repealing the Wright Amendment has already saved me over $150. You bet I'm for it.
...for repealing it,that is.
Anything that has Jim Wright's moniker on it should be abolished, period. What a waste of skin he was/is!
I hate flying out of DFW because of the high car parking fees and the high takeoff and landing fees they unload on you. I drive to Austin to fly, much cheaper.
They must have sent out a memo telling folks they had to vote from home after the IT guys reminded management the votes on the 2nd day could be tracked back to AA.
Absolutely right. My favorite example is the Dallas-Memphis market. Southwest doesn't serve Memphis, so the R/T fare is about $800 on American. Southwest does serve Little Rock, only a two hour drive from Memphis, and the AA R/T fare from Dallas to Little Rock is less that $200, no advance purchase required.
Especially if your destination's Austin!
