That is what peer review is all about. Speaking of that, does anyone have a link to a description of HOW this came out.

It details how even peer review failed to catch the fraud until after the fact. And IIRC somewhere in the article, or later in the thread, it says that bloggers caught the guy. Think Dan Rather and Memogate...
