LUTZ, Fla. (AP) -- A medical examiner's preliminary report Friday confirmed that the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy took his own life, although the cause of death will not be determined for four to six weeks.
Dr. Jacqueline Lee released the findings and said there was no evidence of foul play. Lee ordered a toxicology study, and until it is finished the cause and manner of James Dungy's death are listed as pending.
ADVERTISEMENT His girlfriend found him unresponsive early Thursday, Hillsborough County Sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. Carter said evidence at the scene indicated he had killed himself.
A sheriff's deputy performed CPR before an ambulance took him to University Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Tony Dungy took the team plane from Indianapolis to Tampa, Fla., where he had coached the Buccaneers from 1996-01. He has taken leave from the team, which is 13-1 and will be coached by assistant Jim Caldwell for Saturday's game at Seattle.
Too many ignore signs of suicidal depression. This young man probably had friends who knew but didn't want to see the reality.
RIP.
I wish they'd give a clue as to what evidence makes them think this is a suicide.
BTTT
yep!
Evidence!
......I don't see suicide BEFORE the Superbowl,....after,...maybe....
Evidence!

Head FB coaches ae always at work and it must suck to know that you were too busy to know what was going on with your own son. However, he was an adult and we don't know the facts.
"I wish they'd give a clue as to what evidence makes them think this is a suicide."
A note, maybe?
But I don't see why that information should be withheld from us. I'm not wanting to see the note. I'd just like to know why they're sure it's a suicide.
Tony and family are supposed to be christians......they NEED our prayers and the HOLY SPIRIT's COMFORT.....
Tony CAN,....carry this 'cross' with great sorrow and live WITH HOPE ETERNAL.
Jesus is the HOPE of the world,....HIS Promises are HOPE....GOD CANNOT 'Lie'.....Titus 1:2
Prayer and tears ongoing for Tony and Family,....church family too!
(Romans 10:17)
Maranatha!
James Dungy had also apparently attempt to commit suicide via a prescription drug overdose back in October.

I'm guessing there was probably a note, since there were other people in the house with him. There must be something compelling to rule out accident or foul play, and I suppose it is clear he did not die of natural causes.
This really makes me very sad. I really love Tony Dungy, he reminds me so much of my own dad. In fact, I root for whatever team he coaches, because I always pick my football teams based on the coach. From all reports he is just as fine a man as I've always thought he was. This is such a tragedy for the family.
We had a completely unexpected suicide in our family some years ago, not this close to Christmas, but in December. We knew my sis-in-law had some serious mental problems, but there was never any sign she'd harm herself. It was a complete shock, and also gave one a sense of failure. Then later there was anger at her. It is still very sad, and so sad she had missed so much happiness in the family.
I just am reeling that this has happened to this fine man and his family. But you know, my in-laws are a pretty nice family too. There is no escaping mental illness, it is really the worst thing, I think.
It's really none of anyone's business, even tho the man is 'public' figure.Just my opinion.
I agree. There is no "need to know" for anyone except the family.
Thanks for posting what I was thinking . My prayers are with Him and his family. Perhaps some one wants the colts to be off there game. Maybe more to this story. We will see
It was reported that James Dungy called 911 a few weeks ago aftger taking 13 Naproxen (Alleve.) They showed a copy of the polict report. Florida has something - I think they called it the Baker Act - that allows police to take someone into protective custody. They did this to James but apparently released him. The whole report was strange in that it bought this topic up and showed the police report, but ended without offering any conclusions from what was reported to be a first attempt at suicide some weeks ago.
They have the report I saw online at wthr.com. The previous call was made 8 weeks ago and they say "prescription pain medicine" in the report. On live tv your could read "Naproxen."
My mother-in-law told one of her sons to not even think about suicide because it was selfish. She said his problems might be over but ours would just be beginning.
Suicide - a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
RIP James. God Bless the Dungy family.
The whole "protective custody" situation is really a joke in practice.
