The European Commission criticises a daily newspaper's Mohammed cartoons for opening the door to hate and radicalisation
After months of silently observing, the leadership of the European Commission has weighed in on the Danish debate over daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten's decision to publish caricatures of Muslim prophet Mohammed.
The Commission's vice-chairman, Franco Frattini, called the newspaper's decision to publish the twelve cartoons as 'thoughtless and inappropriate' in a time when animosity towards Islam is on the rise.
'Honestly, these kinds of drawings can add to the growing Islamophobia in Europe,' Frattini said. 'I fully respect the freedom of speech, but, excuse me, one should avoid making any statement like this, which only arouses and incites to the growing radicalisation,' Frattini said to Jyllands-Posten on Thursday.
Jyllands-Posten published the cartoons in September as a way to test the limits of free speech in the face of growing fears that radical Islamists could limit freedom of expression.
Many Muslims were offended by the newspaper's failure to respect the Islamic taboo on creating images of Mohammed.
In addition, some of the cartoons portrayed the prophet as a terrorist, and one drawing in particular - one showing Mohammed with a bomb on his head - was especially damaging, according to Frattini.
'I am a Catholic myself, and if anyone had created a drawing of a holy Christian symbol with a bomb and a message about death, I would personally take it as an insult,' he said.
Carsten Juste, Jyllands-Posten's editor-in-chief, rejected Frattini's criticism.
'This thing has become so absurd that it wouldn't surprise me if the next step would be to take action against Jyllands-Posten,' said Juste, referring to the junior government partner, the Conservatives, declaring that they partially agreed with a group of former ambassadors and ministers public criticism of the decision.
When are these idiots going to understand that it is not islamophobia that's on the rise, it is the islamics who hate Christians and Jews and all Western values.
Yet another country with mostly CINO. Luckily in Denmark there is the Danish People's Party (Det Danske Folkeparti) that keeps the other non-socialists in check. They know that if they are too liberal when it comes to immigration the Danske Folkeparti would grow even larger, and could easily become the largest party in Denmark.
Oh, I forgot. What is euphemistically called "incitement" against Israel and the Jews in the Muslim world is nothing more than the legitimate outrage of the aggreived muslim victims of western colonialism. My mistake.
How many Catholic priests and Reformed pastors gave Sunday sermons last week about how important it was that Jews be destroyed and Israel wiped from the map?
How many caravans were attacked by Jesus and His Apostles?
How many people did Jesus and His Apostles slaughter in the streets of Jerusalem when Jesus returned there in triumph?
Where in the New Testament does it state that Christians are required to engage in holy wars?
Denmark has relatively free speech, then.
Does the pictorial representation have to look at least vaguely like a bearded middle eastern male to insult Islam? What are the rules here?
If I draw a stick figure and label it "Muhammad" have I insulted Islam?
If I draw a snake and label it "Muhammad" have I insulted Islam?
If I name a pig "MuHAMmad" and draw a picture of it have I doubly insulted Islam?
You got it in one!
:-)
(But it really is tragic that these idiotic hypocrites have any say at all in a post 9/11 world. )
I'm sure there is a fatwah headed you way.
(At least for the MuHAMmad - Me, I'm ROFL)
Hey EU Islam wants you out of the way! When will you learn that they want to take over and put you in chains or have you convert.
Yep. It is beginning to look a lot like the 1930's to me. Hope the West is up to the challenge once again.
You need to get a life.
Being hypersensitive to words or cartoons is such a juvenile reaction that it's embarrassing to see any adult from any country obsessing about it.
The fact that primitive, mass-murdering maggots react violently to it should be enough to give you pause. Instead of supporting such an infantile reaction on a cultural level!
You're kidding! You mean they're actually going after some Muslim group that publish...What?... Oh...Okay...I get it....
But excuse me, this a..hole is clueless regarding the 1400 year bloody history of islam. I trust he'll be equally sensitive to muslim feelings as they are sawing his freaking head off. I wonder what impact something like that would have? Suppose al qaeda kidnapped a dozen or so high ranking elitist politically correct european and/or US officials and beheaded them in kind of an al jazeera muslim family special. Would these same he/she's (those that hadn't yet been beheaded) still be demanding that we all mind our manners when speaking about muslims? An interesting question I thought.
That reminds me. Italy had a long and unflattering presence in Ethiopia and environs. If "reaction" to "colonial" grievances is justified, why isn't Ethiopia aflame with hate against Italy?
When are these idiots going to understand that it is not islamophobia that's on the rise, it is the islamics, communists, and perverts, who hate Christians and Jews and individual liberty all Western values.
They are falling all over themselves trying to stop a drawing of Mohammed from being published.
It sure looks like Islamophobia to me.
