NJ Assemblywoman caught switching pricetags
Associated Press ^ | December 23, 2005

Irvington police say a newly appointed state lawmaker tried to switch pricetags on sheets and bedding while shopping at a discount store this week.

Evelyn Williams was arrested on shoplifting charges Tuesday afternoon.

The 53-year-old Newark resident was chosen to fill the term of Assemblyman Donald Tucker, who died in October. She represents the 28th legislative district, which includes part of Essex County.

According to a report published today, Williams was caught by a security camera at Valley Fair Super Discount Center in Irvington while putting 14-99 pricetags on a 59-99 set of bedsheets and a 49-99 comforter.

The assemblywoman was fired from her 70-thousand-dollar-a-year job as an Essex County corrections officer yesterday.

County officials told The Star-Ledger of Newark that Williams had collected 11 (t) thousand dollars in state retirement benefits while continuing to work. They told her to either return the pension checks or give back the salary she earned since September First.

No word from Williams or her lawyer yesterday

She must be a Democrat. If she was a Republican, it would be in the headline.

You have to do a Google search to find out she's a democrat, because it's not mentioned in the article. Just an accident, I'm sure.

Outrageous. They should call a strike.

And, I am certain she's a democrat even thought AP didn't choose to note that fact.

Sine there is no mention of what Party she is I think we can safely assume she's a Dem? If so, this isn't shoplifting. In her world it is simply income transference, getting income to those according to their wants, not their real needs.

Gee, another reason to be proud of being from NJ. Shame Corzine already appointed Menendez, she would have been a perfect US Senator to represent NJ.

We're lucky the title wasn't "Democrat Concerned About High Prices."

Consider it a compliment. It's not news when a Democrat does it.

Williams served four years as the first female president of the Essex County Policemen's Benevolent Association. Williams is a longtime Newark South Ward Democratic Committee leader and is involved with many local neighborhood advocacy and service organizations including the Clinton Hill "Weed & Seed" program

Amazing that no where in the article is the party disignation given. Did it say who appoint her??? Hence who should resign in disgrace for appointing such an obviously dishonest person.

And this from Newsday:

Williams also has a dubious driving record. Her license was suspended 13 times between June 1995 and December 2004, largely for parking tickets she did not pay.

Right--I'm surprised they didn't say she was performing an act of "street theater" to protest American trade practices.

I don't think the county has any fighter planes.
