Here's a solution to a major problem staring them in the eye and doesn't get a mention.
As noted, the melons are full of polluted water. Grow more melons and trash them in a pit with a liner. Those melons can remove a lot of pollution that is in the ground.
Similarly, grow mustard everywhere in New Orleans. Mustard draws lead and other metals out of the ground.

After forest fires some dormant seeds germinate. Something similar is probably happening there.

Since most everyone eats watermelon and spit the seeds out randomly, nature probably responds accordingly. The fact that they are widespread would suggest that is what is happening. Some Botanist at a state University could probably solve the mystery.

Had the watermelon fight at the house a few years back. The next season was a bumper crop in every corner of the yard.
