U.S. plan for border wall sparks anger in Mexico

MEXICO CITY - The Mexican government, angered by a U.S. proposal to extend a wall along the border to keep out migrants, pledged Tuesday to block the plan and organize an international campaign against it.

Facing a growing tide of anti-immigrant sentiment north of the border, the Mexican government has taken out ads urging Mexican workers to denounce rights violations in the United States. It also is hiring an American public relations firm to improve its image and to counter growing U.S. concerns about immigration.

Mexican President Vicente Fox denounced the U.S. measures, passed Friday by the House of Representatives, as "shameful" and Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez echoed those complaints on Tuesday.

"Mexico is not going to bear, it is not going to permit, and it will not allow a stupid thing like this wall," Derbez said.

"What has to be done is to raise a storm of criticism, as is already happening, against this," he said, promising to turn the international community against the plan.

Some sections of the U.S.-Mexico border are marked by fences, but the United States already has erected walls along some heavily trafficked stretches in southern Arizona and California. Those walls, often made of 10-foot-high sections of military surplus steel, typically run several miles.

The proposal has unleashed a tide of ill-feelings in Mexico, where editorial pages are dominated by cartoons of Uncle Sam putting up walls bearing anti-Mexican messages.

Many Mexicans, especially those who have spent time working in the United States, feel the proposal is a slap in the face to those who work hard and contribute to the U.S. economy.

Fernando Robledo, 42, of the western state of Zacatecas, says the proposals could stem migration and disrupt families by breaking cross-border ties.

Robledo, whose son and mother are U.S. citizens, predicted the measure "would unleash conflict within the United States" as small businesses fail for lack of workers.

He said many Mexicans felt betrayed by the anti-immigrant sentiment.

"We learned to believe in the United States. We have a binational life," he said of Zacatecas, a state that has been sending migrants north for more than a century. "It isn't just a feeling of rejection. It's against what we see as part of our life, our culture, our territory."

Vicente doesn't have a thing to worry about. Our gutless wonders in the senate will not allow anything to happen that strengthens the USA.

I saw that. Lou Dobb's does the best reporting on the immigration issue in my opinion. The other shows never even mention some of the stuff he comes up with. Plus, I love watching him diss the government and make them look like fools.

You are so right. And they don't let anyone off the hook. They let that PR guy for Vincente Fox spout off a bit, but then countered it with the truth from Congressman Tancredo.

Easy to do for reporters so inclined.

My favorite Lou Dobbs moment was in 1999, I believe, when in the middle of his show Rick Kaplan broke into it to show a usless Clinton photo-op speech and Lou Dobbs had his producer cut back to his show.

How about they get so anger they decide never to allow one of their citizens to invade our country again.

Maybe they will even get so angry that they will cut off our supply of pot, cocaine and mephanphetimine.

If I build a fence on MY property, I don't really give a rat's ass if my neighbors like it or not...

Just like the democrats here, they don't understand that they get to make the rules governing THIS county when they start winning elections in THIS country!

In other news, a collection of masked housebreakers and burglars
picketed the Qwik-set deadbolt company this morning.

"How are we supposed to make a living if we can't break & enter?" read one sign.

That was my initial reaction, too. But after thinking about it, all Vincente needs to do is to tell the illegals community in the US not to work construction ... then there will be no one to build it!!! :-0

I'm not all that sure the Mexicans have anything to say in this matter.

Pretty funny they get mad at us not letting them break the law.

Basically, they believe they have a right to be here illegally.

Mexico has never been our friend.

I always reminded of how close Mexico was to opening up a front against the US during WWII for Germany. But for Pearl Harbor coming when it did, Germany would have armed Mexico, and we'd have had real problems, just on guerilla destruction.
