L.A. Police Dept. to recruit at Chicago's Gay Games Police force will sponsor volleyball competion at Navy Pier

(Crain's) — The Los Angeles Police Department, in a bid to broaden its recruitment program, will visit Chicago next summer during Gay Games VII in search of officer candidates.

The department has signed on to sponsor the volleyball competition at Navy Pier in the Gay Games sports and cultural festival slated to run here from July 15 to 22 and will be promoting police jobs to all 12,000 participants.

At the same time, the LAPD plans to run advertising in local media and recruit among Chicago residents who won't be attending any events. Written entrance tests will be offered at the Hilton Chicago Hotel from July 18 to 22.

Sponsorship of the games marks the first for any major metropolitan police force, the LAPD said Thursday.

Uniformed officers will be participating in the opening ceremonies.

The LAPD recruited in New York four years ago but has confined its search for new officers to Southern California since then. But under current Police Chief William Bratton there is a growing outreach to minority groups, including gays and lesbians.

"The Gay Games offer us candidates who fit our demographics," says Michael Jolicoeur, the LAPD's gay and lesbian recruitment coordinator. "These are young people who are in good physical condition and they are highly unlikely to be drug users."

To keep its force at 9,200 sworn officers, the LAPD must hire 720 new police officers every year. Each goes through an eight-month training regimen at Police Academy followed by a year on probation. Starting salaries range from $51,000 to $56,000.

If Jack Webb were still alive, the next Dragnet would feature Sgt. Joe Friday turning in his badge and retiring to Idaho.

LAPD could bring that cop in the Village People but they have an APB out for him some outstanding warrants.

Meanwhile, in law offices all over L.A.....

Now there's a high paying government job you want your tax dollars going to support

Law enforcement officers are supposed to be of the highest moral character in order that they may be 100% objective and impartial in their enforcement...

They should be irreproachable and impossible to blackmail.

Two foreseeable consequences:
1. The Gays recruited WILL be promoted as fast as possible. They will stay at a rank only as long as the legal limit requires. They will NOT be denied as the promotion process is deathly afraid of being labeled "Homophobes" and being sued.
2. Maybe "The Rampart Scandal" has been forgotten. Ramapart was the result, as top social study academics found, of lowering standards to gain " minority applicants". I.E, Cops did not become crooked--Crooks became cops.

Hi All-

Oddly enough, I knew an educated white guy with a Bachelor of Science degree who was on the soccer team at his college. Even though he wasn't gigantic, he could benchpress 340 pounds, run the quarter-mile in under 50 seconds, and was as articulate and brainy as the day is long. His family and background is impeccable and we've spent many Thanksgivings and Christmas holidays with them. My parents and I used to go watch him play soccer during the autumn season along with his friends and other relatives.

None of the California agencies would allow him on the force once they learned he was diabetic...after he already passed the written exams, oral exams, and psychological tests. The pre-academy physical is what ultimately knocked him out of contention.

All these years later it seems absurd to me that LAPD would actively recruit homosexuals given their general reckless approach to health, especially as it compares to this heterosexual man with whom my family is acquainted. What a shame that it has come to this for the LAPD to fill spaces for new officers.
