WARNING: Chances of a tsunami set off by Augustine called small, but real.
HOMER -- With Augustine Volcano rumbling, scientists and government officials have finally agreed on what series of events will be necessary to evacuate the Homer Spit and other low-lying coastal areas in lower Cook Inlet.
Disputes over the likelihood of a tsunami from an Augustine eruption -- even doubt over whether such a wave reported in 1883 ever occurred -- had a half-dozen public agencies and scientific groups at loggerheads last winter. But those differences got hammered out in meetings this week, as tremors on Augustine have been building.
Because no one lives near Augustine, agencies had to decide how to interpret remote signals from the island before they press the alarm button.
Scientists say chances of a volcano-produced tsunami remain very low. But they say they are playing it safe.

Where in Alaska is the volcano? Map? I'm flying to Anchorage tonight. I might get a look at it.
Yeah it's the little Island under the "Alaska Maritime N.W.R. In the lower Left.
With there only being 6 hours daylight and it being cloudy almost all the time, I doubt it would be visible on any flight into or out of Anchorage...on a clear day you might be able to see it. There are larger volcanoes to the North like Spurr and Redoubt that are much more visible.
Depending on wind directions Augustine could close the Anchorage airport with ash fall from an eruption. A large one doesn't look imminent however.
Thanks for the map. I go from Anchorage to Taipei in a few days. I'll check my charts and see if we're near it on that leg.
