SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union has asked the state to reveal whether it secretly gathered information on California activists and fed it to the federal government.
Three California affiliates of the ACLU filed a request with state Attorney General Bill Lockyer on Wednesday asking whether officials provided information to the FBI about several environmental and anti-war activist groups, including Greenpeace, United for Peace and Justice and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
The ACLU said it was looking for any evidence that state and local agents - who have less leeway to investigate organizations than their federal counterparts - conducted surveillance that was illegal under California law.
"The Bay Area has a rich tradition of opposing various activities of the government and having a robust debate on current issues," said Mark Schlosberg, police practices policy director of the ACLU of Northern California. "The prospect of the government monitoring that peaceful activity is disturbing."
Earlier in the week, the national ACLU office released what it said were FBI documents showing that agents monitored an anti-war protest at UC Santa Cruz and a 2002 conference at Stanford University on the effect of sanctions in Iraq.
Lockyer spokesman Nathan Barankin said that the office would comply with the request. The FBI has said that it conducts investigations legally and that agents follow Justice Department rules.

So now, does the ACLU now think it is the KGB of America ???
One Judge a couple of days ago summed it up nicely re: the ACLU and one of their obsessions..
(6th Circuit) Court of Appeals: Constitution "does not demand a wall of separation between church and state."

6th Circuit Judge Richard Suhrheinrich wrote in the unanimous decision: "The ACLU makes repeated reference to the 'separation of church and state.' This extra-constitutional construct has grown tiresome. The First Amendment does not demand a wall of separation between church and state. Our nation's history is replete with governmental acknowledgment and in some cases, accommodation of religion."
Yep! The All Communist Lawyers Union is at it again.
"asking whether officials provided information to the FBI about several environmental and anti-war activist groups"
YES!
and we've been reading all of your email, A.C.L.U.
including all those nasty pictures! LMAO
now whadda ya think of that!
and they thought they had a "right to privacy!" :-]
My if this doesn't sound a bit "McCarthyish". If you support law enforcement, you should be 'blacklisted'.
The ACLU operates in some alternate universe, stopping in here only long enough to muck things up.
Check out this letter from the Assistant Attorney General to Senators Durbin and Rockefeller.
It was in a PDF file, so the formatting is a little funky.

The ACLU should be monitored. Their lawyers work for America's enemies.
Seems like a good idea to keep tabs on terrorist organizations.
The ACLU must be a huge organization to have their toes in so many puddles. Most of these puddles are muddy.
