How about at least doing away with its federally enforced monopoly?

Ever heard of UPS, DHL, or any of the others?

You can send anything, even letters, through them.

They'll even rent you a mailbox.

So it's not a monoply.

I'm curious. On what do you base the assumption the Patriot Act is losing support?

EVERY measurable device I've seen has shown STRONG support by the American public.

The only place it loses support is in the Senate, and you should be honest about why. Democrats/RINO's supported it because they didn't want to oppose a President with approval numbers in the extrodinary high range of '70's and '80's. Numbers that realistically never could be maintained forever. What you see now are more realistic approval numbers for the President, and where these Senators actually stood on the Act. But the fact they have remained in Washington over this ACT is proof despite their complete irresponsibility and partisanship, they know they are on the losing end. The public wants this.

They'll go into the campaign season now with a vote on this awaiting. If you really believe this won't be an issue, a WINNING issue for the president and FORCE long extended action on the Patriot Act, guess you'll just have to wait and see for it to be proved to you.

My parents are dead and I haven't needed their permission to do anything, for many decades, pet.

Do the attendants at the asylum know that you've managed to get out of the straight jacket again and run out of that dear, sweet, padded cell, yet again?

Spectre's announcement that he will convene hearings about the NSA will be fun. Let's make a joke about his knowledge of constitutional law in front of the whole country. Actually, it might teach a bunch of Joe Blows about law. Santorum might lose because he supported him last year. That's the bad outcome.

I wanted to cry; when are the Republicans EVER going to see that the Democrats will say or do anything about ANYBODY to further their cause

They see it .. but they don't want to stoop to the Dems level

Which I agree ..

HOWEVER .. there are other ways of dealing with the Dems

Kind of like how Senator Gregg handled Reid with the Orphan remarks

He left Reid stuttering and walking off the floor

he was upset and then showed Byrd saying he loved him as a colleague blah blah blah. ... Was he personally attacked do you think?

My theory: They stopped Byrd from adding an amendment moving the Gorelick wall to West Virginia and renaming it after himself: The Senator Robert F Byrd Memorial Wall of Shame.

As a former leader in the Klu Klux Klan, America's domestic terrorist organization, Senator Byrd just wanted to extend a little professional courtesy to his colleagues in Al Queda, Hamas, and Islamic Jihad.

That is why the Dems only want 3 months in the first place and wouldn't agree to a year

Well, he will need to make Able Danger part of the discussion, will he not? Does he not remember his September 21, 2005 hearing in which the very sort of questions came up then that are coming up now? Maybe the DOD will let those witnesses testify this time; that upset him last time as he did not understand the desire for secrecy on the DOD's part.

Agreed. We don't need fewer Rhinos but more conservatives. I still loathe Specter though. And McCain. And several others.

Oh, I saw that.

These people are EVIL; we may have to vote for McCain to keep them from getting power back, ya know?

If Senators...'would do what they were elected to do'...

exactly. they were elected to represent 'the people' but they represent their own interests.....
when did it become 'a bad thing' to love your country and be willing to speak out for and defend your country? Our enemies want to kill us and Senators are more interested in protecting the rights of these people than protecting American citizens.

Insult me all you want. Please don't talk about my kids like that.

I wasn't insulting your kids, pops. I was illustrating the absurdity of your concern that anybody in the government would give a rat's hind end about what your kids are doing, unless they were engaged in perfidy against the citizens of these United States.

I've not only read 1984 several times, I taught it! Unlike you, I know that it was written about England overlaid with the old USSR. It was Orwell's denunciation of Socialism and Communism.

WE WERE ATTACKED ! If you think that that is no reason for this war, then you need mental care help.

"I'm curious. On what do you base the assumption the Patriot Act is losing support?

Simple. The PATRIOT act has lost the support of 45 senators over the course of a few years. 98 senators voted for it in 2001, but it could only get 53 it vote for cloture on it this time around.

I haven't seen any evidence from you that it's support is high? How about a recent opinion poll? And online ones don't count.

Illegal immigration? I could be wrong but I don't see him caving yet. Conservatives would like him to cave, but he's held the same position a long while.

he said no to a three month extension on the Patriot Act. he definitely wants it made permanent, but I'm not certain he VETO'd a six month extension.

NCLB was his idea, perhaps not the amount of money spent, but the accountability and he got it.

CFR was a cave. McCain's bill on terrorists was a cave, though I'd term it more blackmail as the funding for the troops was on line. Maybe term it both.

I don't remember his position on the Farm Bill.

Some of your examples, are true, others are not.

Flip side we're still in Iraq. Bolton is at the U.N. Tax cuts. Judges. CAFTA (whether someone likes this doesn't mean he didn't fight for it and win) Etc... So, he has a mixed record but generally what he really wants he ends up getting.

My issue was your derogatory statement about the President in conjuction with Frist, as well as the argument advanced the president cannot credibly be believed to stand up to the Democrats. he has done so, and is doing so right now. On every issue, No. Had you started out pointing the record is mixed, it would be different.
