Shouldn't he be firing the illegal strikers? Oh, it's not as if they were smoking illegally or something important like that. (Actually, maybe someone should tell him they are . . .)

The MTA can fire them - It's perfectly legal to do so, under the Taylor law. The MTA board members are appointed by Pataki, Bloomberg and suburban county executives. Pataki really controls it at the end of the day. Bloomberg has some say.
Nobody will be fired. It's impractical - how many people do you know that how to drive a subway? And so far, most New Yorkers support the union (52%-40%), according to
Survey USA, believe it or not. Unfortunately, this is the reality of living in liberalland - there are many, many pro-union liberals here.

He has to go thru these steps before he can "punish" someone, according to Judge Napalitano.
IOW's they have to be in violation of the Judge's order..first.

Cars entering Manhattan below 96th Street must have 4 passengers from 5AM-11AM weekdays. You can drive around with fewer passengers if you are already there.
This is a strike-related restriction.
To: spectre
Huh. Thanks. Color me confused then :) They're already breaking the law, but the city has to wait for a judge to state the obvious? Guess I should've stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night :)

This is ridiculous! FIRE them. F-I-R-E That is the obvious solution....
Bloomberg seems to prefer the "show weakness" strategy that always works so well when dealing with lawlessness.

No, you're not confused..
What's incredible about this strike is the MSM isn't reporting on it as much as I thought they would.
Now, I'm the one confused with that..:(

I think the city is filing a separate lawsuit from the MTA, which already has received a restraining order against the union. The city wants the union to pay fines to the city for lost economic damages.

I was explaining the transit strike to my daughter and mentioned Steve Doocey commenting that cars must have four or more passengers to travel in NYC. Is this true? If so, is it just during the busy Christmas season or all the time? Just between the hours of 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m during the week. (Rush hours basically). Once they get into Manhattan of course they can have less people.

The 4 person car bit probably would have been a good move getting out of Louisiana.
Oh yeh....the LA busdrivers weren't on strike...they just said it wasn't in their contract.

I think they do..
CNN is giving it some attention now. They report that some stores at Brooklyn Mall are down as much as 90% in sales. Broadway is suffering. Museum attendance is down, some stores in the Bronx report sales down by 60%. A very critical week for the retailing industry.
The City has come to a grinding halt, IMHO. And, the tourists who booked their "Christmas in New York" tour have to be suffering as well.
