Senate Blocks Alaska Refuge Drilling

WASHINGTON - The Senate blocked oil drilling in an Alaska wildlife refuge Wednesday, rejecting a measure that had been put into a must-pass defense spending bill in an attempt to garner wider support.

Drilling supporters fell four votes short of getting the required 60 votes to avoid a threatened filibuster of the defense measure over the oil drilling issue. Senate leaders were expected to withraw the legislation so it could be reworked without the refuge language. The vote was 56-44.

Should this be in Breaking, instead of Front Page?

The Senate where things go to die. Does Dewine really think he is going to win in Ohio next year, after the deal of 14, voting against small spendng cuts and ANWR?

The writer of this article knows very well the procedural moves which are coming to overturn this block, but neglected to mention them in the article.

The 'Club' mentality of the Senate is an anachronism. Wonder when these Elites will start to forego 'Senate Rules' in favor of real progress and achievement.

The correct headline should be Senate refuses to limit debate on the bill.

Chafee voted no.

Club for Growth has endorsed his primary opponent, Mayor Steve Laffey.

These Dems can block an awful lot of legislation without ever having to conduct an actual filibuster. The only sane conclusion is that the GOP majority likes it that way.

I think it was more than a little sleazy, to have attached it to the defense bill anyway.

Thanks for saying that; it wasn't defeated; they voted not to stop the pseudo fillibuster.
