WASHINGTON - Muslim-Americans trying to re-enter the United States after international travel should record instances in which they're singled out as security risks, a civil rights group said Tuesday.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations asked traveling Muslims to record any examples of excessive security checks or fingerprinting when returning from a religious conference in Canada this weekend or from the annual hajj to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, next month.
Last year, three dozen Muslim-American men and women were searched, questioned, fingerprinted and photographed without explanation at two western New York border crossings after returning from a from an Islamic conference in Toronto.
No one in the group was charged, and the civil rights council filed a lawsuit against the Homeland Security Department in response. The lawsuit is ongoing.
"Americans of all faiths should be free to travel without fear of being singled out based solely on their religious practices or associations," council legal director Arsalan Iftikhar said in a statement Tuesday.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection assistant commissioner Kristi Clemens said last year's searches were the result of Homeland Security intelligence indicating that some people who attended the Toronto conference either helped raise funds for terror activities or were being used to mask terrorist travel.
Clemens said she was unaware of any current intelligence to indicate a similar threat this year.
"If we happen to have intelligence that would lead us to do some additional questioning, we will do so, but as of right now, they're going to be treated like any other U.S. citizen will be treated - with courtesy and respect."
She said the agency did not receive any complaints from hajj pilgrims returning from Mecca earlier this year. An estimated 10,000 American Muslims travel to participate in the hajj annually, according to the council.

To be fair why don’t they ask to document, for example woman who may be traveling alone in Arab countries? Or how about abuses to travelers in other countries, such as South Americans entering Mexico? Perhaps maybe because documenting human rights abuses to travelers isn’t really their goal?
It's about time we educate the American masses as to who the real bigots are.
Muslims are the risk, who the he$% are the homicide bombers anyway?. And IMHO CAIR is a supporter of terror.
i think non-muslim passengers should start documenting how WE are being profiled unfairly!

CAIR is not a civil rights group. They are an advocacy lobby for Muslims. Think of them as the guys at the dog pound trying to get someone to adopt Cujo.
I hope they do record such examples. I'd like to know how often our DHS employees do their jobs.
How about all Christians document the treatment they receive while in Muslim countires?
If they leave they shouldnt be allowed back . Period.
How about CAIR just keep a running total of the beheadings.
I don't think these guys fully understand their position. This is a free society. The government can prevent government discrimnination. The rest of us are free to ignore Muslims as much as we want. These actions just turn us further away from them. They should be embracing the center.
Frankly I still don't see the risk vs return on having Muslims here. What exactly do they bring to the party? How is our culture enriched by their presence? CAIR needs to spend a bit mroe time on that equation, and a whole lot less on what the majority is doing to hurt them. Especially since - actually, they are the terrorists and foreigners in this equation.
Great post! It's past time to start telling the truth about too many of these people who come to this country to take advantage of our economic system and openly display their hatred of us and our institutions.

Ummmm, we've been documenting Muslim abuses for years and, so far, they haven't put their bombs down and apologized.
Don't see that this is going to change anything.
