(CNN) -- In the cultural battle over whether to use the seasonal greeting "happy holidays" or "Merry Christmas," the latter appears to be winning, according to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll released Tuesday.
In the poll, which surveyed 1,003 adult Americans by phone, 69 percent said they prefer "Merry Christmas" over "happy holidays," which garnered 29 percent.
Compared with the 2004 Christmas -- or holiday -- season, the number of people who said they use "happy holidays" has dropped 12 percentage points, from 41 percent to 29 percent.

That's pretty good. When you see any polls on cnn.com it's usually split 33%/66% - good/evil.

DUH!
Wonder if it has to do with the fact that we are a predominantly Christian nation and the weenies at the ACLU are doing everything in their power to turn this country into a secularist state.
That's because it used to not mean "I hate Christians and all they stand for" to say "Happy Holidays." Now the phrase has a deeper meaning than just, "I hope you have a happy holiday season."
Atheists are taking all the fun out of holidays.
I was just commenting today on how I've been innundated with "Merry Christmas" lately from retail workers. And this is in Seattle (well, the 'burbs).
I think people are pushing back against the oversensitivity of the perpetually politically correct.
When did the word "atheist" or "atheism" get changed to "secularist" or "secular?" Seemed like one day it was just different. Is "secular" more PC?
Now, how many prefer B.C.E.? Oh, put your hand down professor.
I suspect the drop is because people used to mean Happy Holidays as inclusive of Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years. It wasn't seen as political.
Christmas ping.
Honestly, who needs a poll to figure that out? The country practically SHUTS DOWN for Christmas. Does anyone need any more proof?
I had one of my customers tell me today that she was scolded by a woman for saying MERRY CHRISTMAS. The woman said it was politically incorrect to say MC. I told my customer, the woman probably had a 'Kerry for President' sticker on her car.
Exactly. This is insane.
I for one am getting sick of the tyranny of the minority.
I think this is the year that PC police finally angered enough Americans to start saying Merry Christmas.
Also, have you noticed that there seems to be a very distinct lack of Christmas decorations even in the big shopping centers this year? I remember as a child shopping centers festooned with Christmas decorations everywhere.
Great news!
Mrs Magslinger works at a bible store. Needless to say, there is no ban on wishing customers "Merry Christmas". Mrs Mag says the customers seem absolutely delighted to exchange the traditional greeting with her and co-workers.
Finally, a "poll" that brings legitimacy.
Obviously, nothing has changed. It's "Christmas"; Merry Christmas time.
Someday soon we'll again recognize that the marketing, shopping and the crazy rush of mall shopping is not "Christmas".
Someday.
Someday we'll return to the fundamentals of the true meaning.
God is born.
Merry Christmas.
