Many evangelicals were shocked last June when Dr. Albert Mohler, the Southern Baptist Convention's leading theologian, wrote that it's now time for responsible Southern Baptists to develop an exit strategy from the public schools. But why should it have been shocking?

Homeschool ping!
I have been saying that developing a parallel school system must be priority one for churches. Why ever would you turn your kids over to someone who despises everything you stand for?
The public schools will not be reformed until there is a credible alternative. For there to be a credible alternative, you have to build a credible alternative.
Wow.
Withdrawing from the public school system means we've abandoned the public school system to 'em leftie-atheist-dhimmi scum. Shouldn't we at least putup a fight to reclaim the school system from the teacher unions?
Already done.
No. When faced with adversity, run away screaming like a small child.
Put my children in Christian schools, that is.
If it didn't require putting our children on the front lines in enemy terroritory, I might consider it.
Midland Texas is doing this --- a private school for homeschoolers called Midland Classical Academy.
It's cheap because it's set up more like a college --- the kids do most of the work at home, show up for a lecture or two and some tutoring, maybe a test or two.
Stresses the basics and classics.
Nope. This atheist (and non-scum) supports the right of ALL parents to teach their children according to their morals and standards. Christians, Jews, atheists, and everyone else. "Putting up a fight" would only exacerbate "controversies" (like school prayer, Christmas, etc.) where there shouldn't be any. It's not "giving up" - rather, it's taking the initiative.
I can speak from personal experience, I homeschooled until I couldn't afford to{I was a single parent, and self-employed}then I put my kids in private Christian school for two years. I then had to put them in public school when I couldn't afford private schooling and that's when I started having problems....then my daughter started junior college, and the wonderful profs. started in with their poisonous seeds, and I have been through hell and back because of public education. I think my daughter is starting to realize what's going on, and is coming back to her "roots".Homeschool,or Christian schooling will save this country!!!

Not when it involves the education and welfare of your child. We took our oldest out of public school when he went to "middle school" - was being shaken down for his lunch money. (This was NOT an urban school - but a semi-rural suburban area). The vice principal told my husband there was no way she could watch over 900 7th and 8th graders. They didn't even have an adult watching over these kids every morning as the buses unloaded.. That's when our son went to a local Christian school - and we are very happy with the results.
We didn't FIGHT - we took the initiative to send our son to environment where academics were taught with the Christian perspective. We also took away that state funding the public school received for one child. (Of course that was after we had to DEMAND that he be taken off the roles 6 months later.)
That's what PC's are doing, why do you think the MSM is failing?? We have lot's of credible news resources available to us now, within seconds thanks to the internet. There are lot's of credible education alternatives out there now too, especially on line, compared to when I was homeschooling. Homeschooling will save this country,I guarantee.
The Catholics have been doing this for about a century, and I think it's high time the other religions followed suit.
And this actually does bring up an issue, namely, the decline of the Catholic schools in this country, it seems as if every other day, you hear about a long-operated Catholic school that shuts down because of budget problems, it's sad really.
The local school district, having heard from many families who plan to send their children to the new church school next August, has contacted the church to find out the expected class sizes, etc. to adjust their class rooms next year.
The church sponsored school will begin with pre-K through 6th and expects to expand to 7 thru 12 in the near future.
IMO public schools are a proven waste of taxpayer dollars. I put my daughter in a private Christian school this year and the difference is incredible at so many levels. I am by no means well off, but you cannot put a price on knowing your child is getting a wholesome education.
Our Catholic elemetary school and high school are thriving becausewe provide a high achievement alternative to the crappy local public schools. Protestants and non-Christians are welcome, but are not exempt from religion classes and are not excused from prayer and chapel time.
It also does not hurt the high school to have one of the most successful and well known football programs in Illinois.
In our area, a number of churches have started their own schools.
After years of wanting to do it, we finally pulled our older grandkids out of public schools, and we're working on getting the younger ones out as well.
Even at the fairly low tuition they charge, its tough if you have several kids. But it is worth it. We tried a couple of schools before we found the one we like, but it has been well worth it. (It has been a blessing, the fact that we had several schools to choose from).
Over my dead body will any child I'm in charge of go to public schools. Never!
