LONDON - Barbie, beware. The iconic plastic doll is often mutilated at the hands of young girls, according to research published Monday by British academics. "The girls we spoke to see Barbie torture as a legitimate play activity, and see the torture as a 'cool' activity," said Agnes Nairn, one of the University of Bath researchers. "The types of mutilation are varied and creative, and range from removing the hair to decapitation, burning, breaking and even microwaving."
Mattel U.K. said that despite the findings of "this very small group of children, we know that there are millions of girls in the U.K. and across the world that love and enjoy playing with Barbie and will continue to do so in the future."

There was a 16 year old girl that lived in a 'group home' in our neighborhood (25 yrs ago) that would perform careful surgical amputations on Barbie dolls, even going to the effort to make traces of scars in the places that a real surgeon would have to close the skin. She had a collection of about 20 or so of them.
I've seen barbie heads hanging from backpacks with eye's "sewn" with x's and x's across her mouth and nose and a bone in her hair.

Some didn't. Myself, I was a cherry bomb man. Them thangs would blow a 1 foot volcanic mountain to smithereens. Them Barbies and their mamas kept their distance.
A buddy decided an M-80 might do a nice job on a neighborhood mailbox. It never made it to the box. Went off in his hand. His fingers never did work right again.
The flames were cool, and the smoke cloud was enought to draw out the fire department.
Well, yeah, but this was 25 years ago.

As a kid Barbie was the victim of my brother and his friend doing shocking things with a naked Ken. My best friend used to tie a string around Barbie’s neck and fling her around in the air to make her fly, then plunge her through mud puddles. And I have to admit, on occasion, I stuck a few pins in Barbie’s head and tried to bend her knees backwards. And I recall removing her head a few times, too. Maybe it’s her vacuous expression or implausible body dimensions but I don’t think any kids really take her seriously -- never mind adults.
My sister and I got Chatty Cathys one Christmas. We got big hammers to bust them open to see what made them talk. Boy, was that a mistake! They are worth a lot of money today. Needless to say, my mom was not very happy!
I had forgotten those. When were they popular, do you remember? I think they came after my childhood. Boy, we all made some serious mistakes, didn't we?
Probably about 1960-64. They had a little record inside that played. And believe me, they weren't easy to break! Took us a lot of hammering.
