The Virginians
Want to know how the campaigns ahead will unfold? Look to the Old Dominion, where two rising stars offer competing models for how to succeed with Southern voters.
As young men in law school in the 1970s, neither Mark Warner nor George Allen set the legal world on fire. At Harvard, Warner founded a group called the Somerville Bar Reviewthat's "bar" as in drinking studies, not professional ones. "I was the only guy I knew who didn't get law-firm offers after summer internships," he says. At the University of Virginia, Allen lived in a cabin on the mountaintop next to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. But the scenery did more to inspire a passion for deer hunting than textbook reading; his mud-spattered truck was a rare sight in the law-school parking lot. "I probably didn't fit in real well," he says.
But then, as immigrants to Virginia, both men spied their main chance in 1982and took it. Searching for a big financial score, Warner heard through a friend that Atlanta TV mogul Ted Turner had become interested in an infant technology called "cellular" phones. "My law buddies asked, 'Who is going to want to talk on a phone in their car?' " Answer: everyone. He amassed a fortune, bought a mansion in the northern Virginia suburb of Washington and began plotting his entry into politics as a Democrat. Allen, the son and namesake of the Hall of Fame football coach, saw the opening he needed to launch his political career when the state redrew the lines and the rules for electing the House of Delegates. The new plan carved out a district consisting almost exclusively of rural countryside near Charlottesvillethe very woods Allen had been tramping through, thinking conservative Republican thoughts. He ran, and won by 25 votes.

isnt mark warner the former democratic governor? john warner is the republican.
I want to know how Mark Warner qualifies as a 'rising star of the GOP.) He's a Dem who crammed through (with help from RINOs) the biggest tax hike in Virginia history, due to the Commonwealth supposedly being broke. Of course, we found out two weeks later that Virginia wasn't only not broke, the state was running a $900M surplus for the year.
The headline is not on the article, so perhaps the original poster is somehow under the misapprehension that Mark Warner is a Republican.

I made a boo boo. I should have just limited it to George Allen for the GOP.
But Mark Warner is one of the "better" ( note the quotes ) Democrats out there. Hey, if its sHrillary we're stuck with, anyone who looks more reasonable is better.
Warner is a dem. Some lib in VA has set up a website to get him and Mrs. Clinton to run as Pres/VP in 2008.
That's a difficult ticket to picture. The two of them would be like oil and water.
You make a good point. The GOP had better pay attention to Mark Warner - he will play well in Peoria (or Richmond).
For where, Iraq??? Certainly not here in the U.S...
Not with Condi's recent lecturings to Israel, and her responses to Bill O'Reilly that "we're doing everything we can" to secure our borders. What a load...
My brother came up for Thanksgiving with a "Warner 2008" bumber sticker. Not sure where I put that thing.

Maybe Hillary will sell him the VP nomination if he puts up enough bucks, and he's got plenty.
But Mark Warner is one of the "better" ( note the quotes ) Democrats out there.
I beg to differ. He raised taxes, that weren't necessary. Now the state is running a massive surplus (over $1 billion), and not once has the notion come up to reduce the taxes again, or pay back the money to the tax payers.
That is mark warners strength, he is capable of fooling republicans into thinking hes one of the 'better' democrats when hes just as liberal as the rest of his party.
Also, the liberal John Warner defeated the liberal Mark Warner in 1996.
My sister works at a voting place in Va Beach and last week got a call to ask if she would work to recount the votes (for atty general I think) and she said she was too busy with Christmas, our 81 yr old mother coming and etc. and then she got another call from someone in Richmond, again asking her to work. She declined. Next she gets a supeona from the court requiring her to work on the recount! Nice a volunteer position gets a court order!
NO! NO! NO! It's GOT to be a picture of James Drury - THE Virginian! What a guy! I had such a crush on him when I was nine. : - ) I still think he is the best looking man I EVER saw.
It's hard to tell about Warner. He was running for President while he was governor. And his wife will have to change her name if he runs.
