"Weece said the services being offered on Christmas Eve were still technically the "first day of the week" if one went by the custom of starting days at sunset, which some believe was the case in Jesus' day."

Its more than custom. The Liturgical Sunday begins late on Saturday afternoon. A Christmas Eve liturgy would be the Liturgy for Christmas.

"Christmas began as a pagan holiday to the Roman gods, and if we were to really celebrate the historical birth of Jesus, it would either be in January or mid-April. I'm only pointing out the historical technicalities not out of intellectual arrogance, but again because of the illogical, ill-informed and even hypocritical arguments that were aimed at me personally this last week."

That's sort of right but mostly wrong. The Feast of the Annunciation has always been celebrated around March 25th in the East, even before the celebration of the Feast of Christmas. Do the math. The fact that the Saturnalia occurred in December is a fortuitous circumstance.

I'd like to, because I love the Catholic Church and the Pope, even though I'm a Protestant. But I've always understood that only Catholics can take part in a mass and receive the Eucharist. Isn't that true?

I find it ironic that the RC's are weighing in disapprovingly. I know many members of their church who, because of the " it counts " mentality of the Saturday evening mass, have not been up and out on a Sunday morning in years. I think that the Christian churches should be open on Christams, but I think the RC's ought to hold their fire.

Well, no thanks. We'll be in a congregation of believers that still believes, along with its "bishop" (1 Timothy 3:1) that the Bible is the Word of God without error, given by inspiration of God, is the seed of the New Birth, and is true plenarily.

In the picture you posted, what's the outfit being worn? What is it with the particular way of folding of the hands, etc.?

While I don't agree with you on most things, I am glad the Catholic churches I know will be open on Sunday.

I find it sickening that some Protestants believe crap like this:

"Nobody's orthodoxy stands or falls on having a Sunday service."

Bull$*$*. Scripture mandates SUNDAY, not Saturday, not Friday, not Thursday.

SUNDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is an essential issue, and I am pissed off.

So, his excuse is that December 25th doesn't really mean anything...

He more or less is upset that people dare question him. Well, when you close church on Christmas, prepare to be questioned.

Silliness abounds.

I don't think I could be a member of a church that didn't have a service on Christmas Day. I just can't follow the logic...

Savior of the world... His birthday... special celebration just for Him... everyone is invited...

no thanks... too busy... maybe another day.

"Jesus is the Reason for the Season"

This is a great sloagan that reminds us why we are buying presents, decorating, listening to old music and filling out greeting cards.

However, in our sermon last Sunday, or priest had a new slogan:

"You are the Reason for the Season. Jesus is the Gift."

Our Mass starts at Midnight, goes for about 90 minutes and ends with the choir party which can go until 3 to 4 AM! Great Mass with orchestra and beautiful music, woven into the liturgy correctly, lots of altar boys who serve with precision; We usually have 20 to 30 for the Midnight Mass, and all of this in Detroit.

I think that the annual battle over Christmas has become part of the tradition of Advent. While we shouldn't fight against the secular humanists any less, we should look forward to the annual "Jousting with the Infidel."

It's sort of like in the Seinfeld definition of "Festivus", one of the made up traditions was "The Airing Of The Grievances." We should do it something like that.
