The Republican sponsor of a flag-burning bill for which co-sponsor Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has come under attack from fellow Democrats said she called him asking to sign on to the measure.
Sen. Bob Bennett (R-Utah) told The Post he had never worked closely with Clinton before she got in touch with him out of the blue with an offer to co-sponsor his new legislation making it illegal to desecrate Old Glory.
The former first lady's support of the flag-burning ban first revealed by The Post and viewed by experts as Clinton's attempt to woo red-state heartland voters for her potential 2008 White House bid has blown up in her face.
Conservatives and liberals alike have shot apart the anti-flag-trashing bill, accusing Clinton of mounting a purely political end-run around the Constitution.
From the right, the American Legion torched the measure as "a long road to a dead-end" because it lacks any constitutional teeth.
But more important for Clinton has been the onslaught from the left the core she needs for any hopes of a White House win.
The New York Times editorial page shredded her for pandering to the right, as did the Buffalo News, Winston-Salem Journal and St. Petersburg Times.
Even liberal comedian-talk show host Bill Maher took Clinton to task, blasting her as "an opportunist who doesn't really believe what she's saying."
The outcry has propelled Bennett who voted to impeach Hill's hubby, Bill Clinton, in 1999 into the unlikely position of Clinton defender.
"I don't think she's pandering," said Bennett. "I've discussed it with her. I think she is quite sincere."
But to add political insult to injury, Bennett predicted their push to ban flag-burning is headed for the trash can.

Next up: Posing with a shotgun, followed by a faux-folksy "Can I get me a huntin' license?" They're so predictable.
After she opens a charge at Wal-Mart, enrolls in divinity school, and gets a lifetime membership in the John Birch Society, she'll need to get a shopper's card at Sam's Club, and schedule daily morning prayer services in her Senate office.
And just to make sure she covers all bases, Bill will take an anti-adultery pledge in the vestibule of the National Cathedral, when Hillary takes her minister's vows.
Oh, and after rifle-range practice, Hillary will campaign for 2008 wearing
the official DNC apron, and give Easy-Bake oven cookie demonstrations
Nah, Billie Boy is the natural CON artist. He lies when the truth would serve him better, but the sheeple (and women particularly) suck it up.
Hill may have been calling the shots for Bill, but it takes a huckster like Bill to sell it. Hill can't sell it.
I'm against this amendment, by the way. I might one day feel compelled to burn the flag. When the flag no longer stands for freedom, I think its a legitimate protest.
Bennett is a jackass if he believes the beast. The beast thunks everyone from a Red State has three teeth and listens to willie nelson music. Both are suspect.
by the way ,the entire clinton for president is an END RUN
AROUND THE CONSTITUTION as bill would a third term in the
white house (two for the price of one and all that)
BINGO!!!!! THANK GOD!! AT LAST, someone on FR that agrees with me! I've been saying that for MONTHS, and everyone just pooh-poohed me. And THAT'S why everyone should be very afraid. Don't kid yourself for one instant-there are a TON of people who can't stand her-but ADORE him (mainly women, as has been stated). And they'll pull the lever for her in a heartbeat, with a 'wink-wink' attitude("Well, you know who'll REALLY be running things"), feeling they'll be getting the Slick One back. This was their game plan all along-Why do you think they've stayed married, since they don't even live together any more-a fact the MSM will NEVER bring up.
