It was a disgusting, when Yahoo helped China jail a dissident writer in September. But it wasn't exactly uncommon. Lots of American technology companies have been helping out the autocrats in Beijing, Legal Affairs notes.
Take Cisco. The company "earns $500 million a year in revenues [in China] and holds 60 percent of the Chinese market for routers, switches, and other sophisticated networking gear."
That includes "the watchdog router that prevents Internet users in China from gaining access to banned websites."
And it includes Policenet, which "connects officials of the Public Security Bureau a national agency with local branches that handle security, mmigration, 'social order,' and law enforcement to each other and to electronic records that store a wealth of information on every citizen in China."

So if Toyota or Ford sold vehicles in china they would be tools of oppression because they allow the police more mobility?
Cisco sells routers. What someone else does with the routers is their business. Cisco didn't make changes to the routers to facilitate blocking western websites, thats just part of what a router does.
A few thousand of these makes it impossible for the chineese to block them all, and they would have to choose to shut off the internet completely or give up. Instead of bitching about the fact that western gear is used in china why don't these goofie defense tech clowns do something useful? Like adding a hundred thousand anonymous web redirectors per month with cheap linux boxes running on thousands of broadband connections all restricting their connections for redirecting to Chinese users?

Exactly. Routers are a civilian commodity that can be used for good or ill. Asking Cisco to police how its products are used it absurd. If they stopped selling to the Chinese, the Chinese could just as easily get those from elsewhere. Same thing for computers, cars, or guns. High tech military hardware is another matter, however.
