LOL! Silliness. They don't have the nerve to ask disruptive people to leave, so they want the government to Do Something.

Cell phones are the least of the theatre problems. There's the Talking Idiots--those who come to the movies just to talk all the way through it. The only way to stop that would be having those attendants with the flashlights, and that's not gonna happen.

It's not all the leftwing politics, the porn or the stupid plots and remakes--it's also the lousy movie experience that is going to drive theatres out of business. The worn-out projectors (I though my view of Harry Potter was film noir, it was so shadowed and darkened--but it wasn't style, it was the projector).

But, most of all, it's the rude audience . I'm going to see Narnia--I hope it won't get wrecked...

the industry tries to come up with ways to bring people back to the cinemas.

Ever look at the product you offer?

Where is this a big problem? I go to the theater maybe once a month, maybe a little less. Anyway, I've yet to hear a cell phone in the theater.

Some theaters already have no cell phone policies and ask moviegoers to check their phones at the door.

Would you like a fingerprint, DNA, and urine sample to go with that sir?

Many people are on call 24 hours and must have a beeper or cell phone . You can put it on vibration but they will loose customers by blocking.

Man no.1 : Hey baby, how about a little tongue action, huh?

Man no.2 : Yeah, stick your tongue down his throat!

( They kick G and Victoria's seats )

Victoria : What are we gonna do? Shall we just move?

George : That won't be necessary.

( G gets up and turns towards the two men )

George : Shut your traps and stop kicking the seats! We're trying to watch the movie! And if I have to tell you again, we're gonna take it outside and I'm gonna show you what it's like! You understand me? Now, shut your mouths or I'll shut'em for ya, and if you think I'm kidding, just try me. Try me. Because I would love it!

Jam the local area signals, then charge customers for access in text only.

I have never once been bothered by a cell phone in a theater. It's the people who think the theater is their livingroom and talk up a storm who are the most disruptive in my experience. And parents who bring their little kids/babies to non-kid movies and see nothing wrong with letting them run around or scream the entire time.

We don't need the government stepping in, but it sure would be nice if people learned some manners.

I thought the whole point of movies like "NAMBLA Mountain" was to get the viewers to use their cellphones to call up dates. ;-)

theater owners "have to block rude behavior" as the industry tries to come up with ways to bring people back to the cinemas.

It ain't "rude behavior" in the theaters keeping me away; it's the "rude behavior" on the screens -- think "Bareback Mounting"...

As if cell phones are the problem in theatres today....

The problem are the jerks who think they can talk it up like they're sitting in their living rooms.

The last time I went to a movie was a couple years ago.  Up until I stopped, my experiences there became progressively worse and worse until I'd lost all pleasure in going.

Over the next 20 years or so, the theatre industry is going to see some serious culling.

This is what happens when rude behavior become the norm. I have a home situation that requires me to be reachable immediately. So, if my incoming calls are blocked, I will never go to a theater.

And, I have never made a call from inside the theater. I hate most people, byw.

Why do they need permission to block (electronically jam) cellphone calls? Just put up a sign at the entrance advising patrons that their phones will be inoperable in the theater. That way, the customers can decide whether or not they wish to see the movie with that policy as a condition.

Anyone who considers himself so indispensable to society that being out of phone contact for a couple of hours is unthinkable probably shouldn't be watching a flick anyway. I am unaware of any constitutional right to see a movie. This reminds me of the couple (on another FR thread) who threatened to sue the San Francisco 49ers because they objected to being searched upon entering the stadium. If you don't like the policies of a private business, then don't patronize it!

I look forward to the development of pocket-sized, affordable cellphone jammers. I'll buy one and take it with me everywhere. Think of the peace and quiet at bars and restaurants, theaters, golf courses, cars, and office meetings.

They don't want the government to do something, they want to be able to block the signal. Right now the government is PREVENTING them from doing something. And what the theaters want to do is the right thing to do: block the signal.

People went to movies for 8 decades without the "security" of cell phones in their pockets.

If you're that afraid of being out of touch, stay home and sign up for netflix.

By the way, there are things the average person can do. I encourage people to buy those devices that jam cellphone signals. I won't provide a link here, but y'all know what I 'm talking about.

Doctors have been wearing pagers into theaters for years. Would this stop their signals from being received?

I work for a Mobile phone company. I have one 2002, 252 model Nokia TracFone that is perfect. It stays in the truck 98% of the time. I refuse to pay $39 or $60 a month to listen to calls from people telling me where they are and what they are doing or asking me what I am doing, or to spread the latest gossip about that or this neighbor. I get one 40 minute card every 2 months. I refuse to become busy all the time.

Re-read the article. The private businesses are PREVENTED from doing anything about it themselves due the to FCC. It is currently illegal to buy or use a cell phone signal jammer in the United States.
