SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The National Association of Theater Owners wants the Federal Communications Commission to allow the blocking of cell phone signals in theaters.
John Fithian, the president of the trade organization, told the Los Angeles Times theater owners "have to block rude behavior" as the industry tries to come up with ways to bring people back to the cinemas.
Fithian said his group would petition the FCC for permission to block cell phone signals within movie theaters.
Some theaters already have no cell phone policies and ask moviegoers to check their phones at the door, Fithian said.
The Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association -- a Washington-based cell phone lobby that is also known as CTIA-the Wireless Association -- said it would fight any move to block cell phone signals.

It's 2006. I cannot be out of touch with the rest of the world for 2.5 hours.Wait. I gotta comment on this one more time. Doesn't sound like you have time to watch the movie. So why go to it? Why do anything else but work? Do you sleep? Make love? Do you have your blackberry on vibrate when you make love? Take a shower.
If you can't take a 2.5 hour break, you have an exceedingly f*d up life, and I feel sorry for you.
Perhaps the projector lamp as well. :)
I'm sorry too: I thought this was civilized discourse. If I want to block all RF of every kind on my private property, I should be free to do so. If I want to make a house rule that all males squat on their heels instead of using chairs, I can. It would be bad for business, but that's my problem. I should be equally free to ban bald people, and to mandate that everyone wear a T-Shirt saying, "I'm with stupid." Why are you confused what private property means?
FReepmail me when you've invented it; I'd like one for the house!
Wow, what a great response.
"Then stay home. That way you won't be far from the toilet, either."
Ewww! About a month ago, I got a cell phone call from someone I know. About a minute into the call, I hear this noise. It was a toilet flushing! This idiot had called me while he was sitting on the pot.
I hung up, and have blocked his number.
Since 2002 I have been fed up with Hollywood politics. I believe my days of going to the movies are over.
Oh, piss off. You know nothing of my life so STFU, okay? Consider yourself "blocked", girl.
I have all the gadgets, and I know how to use them to work smart, not like a friggin slave.
"Block my BlackBerry when it is in vibrate mode and there will be discussions. It's 2006. I cannot be out of touch with the rest of the world for 2.5 hours."
Glenn, you're too important to go to the movies. Please always be available for the inevitable crisis that only you can solve.
Perhaps some of these cell phone junkies are hyper-active or deluded about their own self importance. Sounds like they need to chill out or take a tranquilizer.
Talk about witty responses. Your are the Wit of the Day.
"Do you own a car, Mr. Luddite?"
Witty, indeed. I'll bet he does own a car. I'll bet he doesn't drive it in the theater, though.
Good thought Tax-chick and the shame of it is, this artist used to do just that. He would have an afternoon concert for FREE to any school that wished to bring a group. Last week he just left and went home.
John, kindly provide instructions on how I should live my life in its entirety. You seem to have all the answers.
I think you're right. Some people have gone to using these devices (and I use them all, and enjoy them all and am productive with them all) to becoming addicted to them. And they have all the nervous, annoying and irritating habits of any addict.
LOL
That is your choice. As long as you respect those who choose to go somewhere to be entertained and are not in the mood for distractions, that's cool.
Trouble is, the lowest common denominator types aren't that way which is why we have such wussified traffic laws.
