SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The National Association of Theater Owners wants the Federal Communications Commission to allow the blocking of cell phone signals in theaters.
John Fithian, the president of the trade organization, told the Los Angeles Times theater owners "have to block rude behavior" as the industry tries to come up with ways to bring people back to the cinemas.
Fithian said his group would petition the FCC for permission to block cell phone signals within movie theaters.
Some theaters already have no cell phone policies and ask moviegoers to check their phones at the door, Fithian said.
The Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association -- a Washington-based cell phone lobby that is also known as CTIA-the Wireless Association -- said it would fight any move to block cell phone signals.

What? Am I an easier target? lol. I AGREE with you 100%. What really irriates me though is that when you sit on the aisle as a courtesy you are up and down because of people that can't wait to eat or didn't go to the bathroom before the show. I honestly don't know why they even come. They miss so much of the movie.
Are you kidding? I would be cheering the usher on and asking if he needed any help. People are rude because they get away with it.

Okay, here's another argument. If property owners have the absolute right to mess with the signals that come on their property, does that mean that it should be legal to pirate satellite TV service?

Colleges have been doing this already. It is sad that this is necessary. I am not really in favor of this because sometimes you need to take a phonecall. If people were more considerate this wouldn't be an issue.

Nope. Minnesota. People here are polite. Business is good. Lots of new theaters and other things. A very nice place to live, indeed.
I can sympathize with that somewhat, and would also stick up for the usher. Still, I'd prefer to watch a movie in uninterrupted peace. Why should I have to pay $8.00 to get in a shouting match with some rude idiot and to drag him outside to teach him some manners, when I have to do all of that for free at holiday family gatherings?
Well my theory is that they either won't come back or will modify their behavior. Word will get out that this will not be tolerated and people will behave. It works for kids. Have you ever noticed how when one gets in trouble the others start acting better?:')

And, since nobody's mentioned it yet, jamming an area the size of a theater without also shielding it will block significant areas outside the theater as well.
We to to the movies about once a month as well. I have heard cell phones ring many times and it didn't bother me in the least. some people go completely bonkers at the sound of a cell phone, one man climbed over a seat and was ready to attack. He was obviously a little tightly wrapped.
Loud talking and laughing have kept me from hearing lots of good movie lines. I remember a great comedy a while back where the people behind me must have seen it before and they started laughing before the funniest lines and blocked them out completely. I would have moved but there was nothing left but the front row.
Glad you agree -- don't know what you mean about being an 'easier target.' My comments were general, not personal. Loss of civility is a growing problem and it needs to be addressed. I choose aisle seats myself and, yes, lots of people are rude and inconsiderate. Sometimes I think Sartre was almost on the mark when he said: "Other people are hell."
There are professionals who are always on call, even if off-duty. Doctors, lawyers, IT professionals. I know a guy who works for HSBC. If their ATM network goes down, he HAS to go in and repair it, no matter what. Customers who can't get their money aren't interested in allowing the IT pros a personal life.I'm one of those people. I know what it's like to be on-call. I'm not on call all the time, and I don't know anyone who is, but when I am on call these are some of the things I try to avoid doing:

Here's a simple solution: see the kinds of movies the idiots who "cannot be out of touch with the rest of the world for 2.5 hours" will not pay to watch. That's right, Eeeeleetist! They're usually very good, uplifting and intellectually stimulating. The cat visits a movie theater once or twice a year, always a matinee, and never in the past several years patronized by any vulgar cell phone/Blackberry maroons.

Well I don't go to the movies much. Most bore me . I can't remember what I saw the last time I went. I'm 5'2' or less and there can be a 100 seats empty but tall people like to sit in front of me.
