Congress Approves $29 Billion More in Katrina Aid
WASHINGTON (Dec. 17) - Congressional Republicans agreed Saturday on $29 billion in additional aid for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the other powerful storms that lashed the United States earlier this year, far more than the Bush administration proposed earlier this fall.
"We have a good agreement," said Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who has patrolled the Capitol for days in an effort to coax as much money as possible from lawmakers eager to adjourn for the year.
Officials stressed the additional funds would not add to federal deficits, a priority for conservative lawmakers. They said the hurricane relief as well as an additional $3.8 billion to help prepare for an outbreak of avian flu would be offset, in part by a 1 percent cut across a wide swath of federal programs.
The cut would affect programs for domestic programs as well as defense and homeland security, according Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Calif., chairman of the House Appropriations Committee. Federal support for veterans, whose ranks are swelling as the result of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, would not be affected, he said.
He not only didn't transfer the money he added more money.
Bush can't do anything. His veto would be overriden by congress.
So sick of Katrina bankrupting this country and Louisiana keeps complaining.
The worst was hearing that because of Blanco we are now building the levees what a joke.
Good, now certain Senators can delay their strokes until another day.
Mississippi (and Haley) ping!

"So sick of Katrina bankrupting this country and Louisiana keeps complaining."
But I'm guessing you're not sick at all of these yearly 100 billion dollar checks we're sending to Iraq. As a Mississippian, I'm glad Congress is giving us some help because we don't have the capital in this poorest of all states to rebuild ourselves. If California gets hit by the "Big One" no doubt we'll send hundreds of billions to them even though they have the gall to live in a disaster-prone area.
What happened with everyone's insurance? Why do we still have 40,000 people living in hotels in Houston on the taxpayers' dole almost six months later? There is plenty of housing here and there are plenty of jobs available. I am all for helping people out in a time of tragedy, but that time is quickly passing. Most of the people that are still in free housing weren't home owners in LA or MS. They were renters. Renters can live anywhere.
They were renters. Renters can live anywhere
----I have to agree there.
