Bank charity supports liberal critics

Citigroup Inc., one of the world's largest financial services companies, operates under this slogan: "Live Richly." But the company's foundation frequently donates money to organizations opposed not only to such a philosophy, but also to the marketplace under which Citibank has prospered.

Those findings were unearthed in the December issue of Foundation Watch, a publication of the Capital Research Center. The Washington, D.C.-based center monitors nonprofits.

The Citigroup Foundation and Citigroup businesses gave more than $100 million to charitable causes in 2004. The foundation made more than 2,900 grants in 86 countries.
