Republika Srpska Defense Minister Milovan Stankovic has proposed to donate surplus weapons to Afghanistan, the Banja Luka daily "Nezavisne Novine" reported on 15 December. If the proposal is accepted by Bosnian Serb authorities, the Afghan government would receive thousands of automatic rifles and several hundred machine guns. The surplus weapons were to destroyed, Stankovic said. According to a report the United States proposed that the Bosnian Serb forces send their surplus weapons to Afghanistan. AT
The Bosnian Serb government said Dec. 15 it would donate to Afghanistan part of its surplus weapons remaining from Bosnias 1992-95 war, instead of destroying them. A total of 4,500 rifles, copies of the well-known Russian Kalashnikov, 400 machine guns and one million rounds of ammunition will be given to the Afghan security forces, a government statement said.
These weapons are from our arms surplus that was supposed to be melted, because we cannot sell it, Bosnian Serb Defense Minister Milovan Stankovic told journalists. He added that the idea was suggested by the U.S. military. It is estimated that at the end of 1992-95 war there were some 430,000 Bosnian soldiers, while the current professional army numbers only 12,000.
Due to the significant downsizing of its forces Bosnia had to destroy huge amounts of its surplus weapons. Post war Bosnia consists of two semi-independent entities -- the Serbs Republika Srpska and the Muslim-Croat Federation -- linked by weak central institutions.
Well, quiet the suprise. I bet it was a lot cheaper to ship then to destroy, but maybe it'll help us get some common ground with the serbs.
The Serbs already have all the common ground with us that they need because we share a common enemy: the Islamofascist terrorists.
yes but only when they arn't trying to kill the croatians, slovinians, and croats.
who are 'slovinians', and what is the difference between 'croatians' and 'croats' ?
