Canada's Prime Minister has the chutzpah to attack us instead of attending to his problems at home. Whatever did we do to Canada? All we did was tell them to lay off us. And this how we get repaid? We need friends like Canada like we need enemies and fewer and fewer Americans are going to visit north of the 49th. Let's face it, there are better places where we could be welcomed to spend our money without being hectored for not even throwing our weight around.

We use to visit Canada at least four times a year, beautiful country, but we got so fed up with the politician's constant berating of America. Add Canada to the boycott list. They best not bite the hand that feeds their socialist rumps.

Debbie Schlussel missed a golden opportunity to level some valid criticism at Paul Martin and the government of Canada. She comes across as a half-witted moron when she writes incomplete sentences (see first paragraph), posts erroneous information (failing Canadian economy?), and doesn't know how to spell "Newfoundland."

Paul Martin knows that the Conservatives are going to win...and he's pulling an Clinton/Gore maneuver. Accuse everyone else of doing exactly what you are in fact doing. He's trying to deflect his own party's shortcomings on what he believes is easy political capital.

It's easy to blame the US, the eviction of Saddam Hussein was/is very unpopular in Canada.

I was in Canada and talking to a group of Canadians last week about the war thing. I explained to them about how Saddam was not following the terms of surrender from 1991, That's why we threw him out. I then asked a question about the UN and asked should the UN have any teeth. When the response was in the affirmative I then asked who exactly was going to provided the money, materiel and men to make those teeth sharp. The response was US. At that point I asked why then is the US not within it's rights to act unilaterally against Saddam who was in violation of the UN Res. 1441 and and other resolutions. They instinctively agreed that the US was right and that they have only been presented a certain set of facts by the international/hate-America media. The best thing to do is ignore Martin...he's toast and he knows it.

scores of people on welfare

Scores? As in multiples of 20? That must be awesome for Canada to have only 40, 60, 80 or perhaps even a hundred people on welfare.

Too bad the PM didn’t put more energy into getting justice for William Sampson. Martin’s attack on the US in a con. I just pray and hope the US Administration doesn’t get suckered into an ongoing debate. That will only work against Harper’s chances, since he is viewed as being to soft with the US (which is preposterous as Martin only talks tough, but has NEVER taken action on key issues such as softwood; it took advocacy from the CPC to get the beef ban raised in Montanan courts).

Canadians have a screwed up idea as to what leadership is. They think yelling about how much better you are than Americans is leadership. A government that cares about its people does more than grandstand for the cameras. It DOES something.

The Liberals are conning Canadians as well about the effects of the dollar. We will weather the storm of an appreciating currency? Our economy is the strongest of the G8? We will not adjust, not fast enough. 10 years of a currency advantage has been reversed in the course of 2 volatile years. Raising interest rates hasn’t helped either. There is a very good argument the Canadian dollar will go to par. That’s great for visiting Disneyland, but that will murder every export industry except perhaps oil. Our nation’s economy operates on a trade surplus – meaning we live or die on exports. End of story.

You are right, Martin managed to spin the history of this tiff as though the US started it. But it was Martin, out of the blue, chastising the US for Kyoto. What Martin would really love is an American endorsement of Stephen Harper. That would clinch the election for him. I am sure the Administration is too smart to get suckered into that. But even and endorsement from a well know conservative personality or news agency could be damaging.

I think we can all agree that Paul Martin and the Liberals
are a bunch of dickheads whose time is nearly up (thank God).

That said, what's the crap about the "failing Canadian economy"?
The Canadian economy has been humming along great for quite some time with
solid annual GDP growth, low unemployment and budget surpluses, trade surpluses an ever
stronger Canadian dollar.
3 - 4 years ago it cost me $1.60 CDN to buy $1.00 USD, now I can buy $1.00 USD
for $1.16 CDN
Actually the strong Canadian economy is our greatest weakness
in being able to kick out the Liberals as it's easier to switch
Gov't when the economy is in the tank.
Hopefully her other "facts" are more factual....

If you really want to hurt Canada hard, there is a simple way. Just open the border and offer Green Cards to all Canadian Born folks willing to give up their Canadian Citizenships. Too keep out the riff-raff demand a $5000 "processing fee" and do all the usual background checks. (Canada currently has a $990 immigrant head tax). Watch about 1,000,000 skilled Canadians minimum leave for the US.

Martin is blaming America for all of Canada's ills.

Is that really true, or is it just that we only listen when we hear ourselves mentioned? If Martin does only blame the US and it's that blatant, will Canadians get sick of it before the election?

I never got the appeal of the West Wing. If I wanted to see fictional politics with a left-wing spin, I watch Canadian elections and debates on C-Span. Lately it's gotten pretty predictable, but seeing the Tories go from 169 seats to 2 in one night was more exciting -- if more depressing -- than watching Martin Sheen emote.
