House GOP Leaders Draft Bill Rejecting Calls for Pullout From Iraq

WASHINGTON — House Republican leaders drafted legislation on Thursday that rejects calls for withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq as "fundamentally inconsistent with achieving victory" and said they would force a vote on Friday.

It would be the second time in five weeks that GOP leaders maneuvered for a vote on the war in the face of Democratic calls for a timetable for withdrawal.

The resolution expresses the commitment of the House "to achieving victory in Iraq."

It honors the sacrifices of U.S. forces and praises Iraqis for voting in parliamentary elections Thursday. The election is "a crucial victory for the Iraqi people and Iraq's new democracy, and a defeat for the terrorists who seek to destroy that democracy," according to the resolution.

U.S. forces, the measure said, would be required in Iraq "only until Iraqi forces can stand up so our forces can stand down, and no longer than is required for that purpose."

The resolution seeks again to put the House on record as rejecting an immediate troop pull out.

Some House Democrats, including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, have lined up behind calls by Rep. John Murtha, R-Pa., for U.S. troops to start coming home.

In the Senate, several Democrats have said forces need to begin withdrawing after Thursday's elections, provided they are successful.

The resolution

The only question is: will the House Dems who voted agains the pullout vote in favor of this and further alienate their moonbat base, or will they flip-flop?

It's nice to see the GOP back in action, by the way. This resolution definitely puts us where we should have been this whole time: on offense.

All calls? Any timeline fantasized by the Dems?

Bad move.

Had the Dems locked into rejecting Murtha's immediate withdrawal. Dems locked into appeasing their moonbat wing. Now giving them an opening to revisit the whole issue, resurrect the revisionism that Murtha only wanted a phased withdrawal.

But a Pelosi spokeswoman, Jennifer Crider, said: "Talk about playing politics with the Iraq war, American troops and the American troop deserve a real debate — not the Republican stunt." She said Democrats sought changes "that would reflect the bipartisan spirit that a resolution like that should be offered with" but they were rebuffed.

What in the world is this anti-american communist saying?

As General Honore so elegantly stated, Stop being stuck on Stupid!

Don't count on it. The Dims will vote against this measure because they've already enraged their base enough.

Lt. General Honore says: "Madame Pelosi, you are stuck on stupid. And by the way, our troops need to know that the American public is behind them a lot more than they need a 'debate,' as you put it."

My question is, when are Bill Frist and the Senate Republicans going to do the same thing?

The election is "a crucial victory for the Iraqi people and Iraq's new democracy, and a defeat for the terrorists who seek to destroy that democracy," according to the resolution.

I think that the above would be more properly worded if it was changed to:

The election is "a crucial victory for the Iraqi people and Iraq's new democracy, and a defeat for the terrorists and the democratic party cut-and-run congresspeople who are afraid that if the U.S. succeeds in Iraq they are doomed in the next round of elections coming up in 2006 and 2008.

I'm not sure why we're doing this again. We already won this vote. Re-doing it is not going to accomplish anything, except possibly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
