.S. Senate hopeful Kevin Scott discussed the importance of gaining moderate support for his 2006 campaign against incumbent Sen. Edward M. Kennedy 54, D-Mass., last night to about 15 students in the Leverett JCR.
The discussionsponsored by the Republicans for Social Economic Policy (RSEP), a caucus of the Harvard Republican Clubfocused on the importance of convincing Massachusetts residents to vote their views, not their affiliations.
The Democratic party is going so far to the left on so many issues, Scott said. Weve got to put forward the image that a moderate Republican is electable.
Scott was optimistic about his chances against Kennedy, who has been in office for more than 40 years. Groups all over the country are very serious about unseating Ted Kennedy, Scott said, adding to laughs that, I think my closet has fewer skeletons.
After the Wakefield resident mentioned his grass-roots background, he went on to discuss the need for tax reform. I lean more towards a flat tax, Scott said. It will bring a lot of new money into the government.
On the Iraq War, of which Kennedy has been one of the most vocal critics, Scott suggested that enabling the Iraqi military be the number-one priority. I dont know if I see that focus, he said.

The long knives from the right will be out for this guy within days.
I hope to win lotto.
Mary Jo's??
Remember his race against Kennedy? I do.
Yeah. A moderate will do REALLY WELL against Kennedy. "Well, yeah, okay, I mostly agree with that, uh, except, uh, where I differ is... um...."
Ooh! Fireworks!
< /s >
Good luck! In Massachusetts one can get away with murder, as in Kennedy's case, or having your live-in lover running an escort service, with admin costs picked up by the US government, as in Frank's case, but you can't be Republican! (for some reason the Governor's office is exempted)
Unseat?
He better bring a skip loader if he plans to move THAT derriere.
I hope for a shiny red sports car and a nymphomaniac heiress girlfriend who owns a liquor store.
LOL!
Which one do you want first?
The sports car or the girlfriend?
The babe, because she can buy me a sportscar.
Now, now.....you have to remember that this is Massachusetts and a real Republican just can't win there. It's just like New Jersey and look how much better the moderate "Republican" did in this year's Governor's race in comparison to the more conservative Bret Schundler in 2001.....oh wait....never mind.
It will take this.
Yeah, and I want Bill Gates's bank balance and John Holmes' endowment.
LOL!
Your dream has better chance, than this GOP MODERATE hopeful!
better bring a crane
LOL. You're right - it's NOT just a metaphor, unfortunately
slice slice poke poke
it's invertly proportional: the closer you are to the cape cod orca's ideology the larger the margin of defeat he will hand you. if you are extremely conservative you will fare much better, but to beat him you have to harpoon the old orcinus.
Exactly. If you have the choice between the Real Thing (Kennedy) and a wannabe, why choose the wannabe?
I don't know that he could win, but what's needed is someone who'd actually ENGAGE Kennedy, ideologically and factually. He's such a huge target.
And, with that straight line, adieu for now.
