WASHINGTON -- Saying Christmas is under attack, Virginia Rep. Jo Ann Davis sought passage Wednesday night of a resolution expressing support for "the symbols and traditions of Christmas."
The largely symbolic resolution, scheduled for a House vote as early as today, triggered a partisan culture clash in the House chamber. Conservative Republicans applauded the measure, but many Democrats criticized it as religiously insensitive.
Davis, an outspoken Christian conservative from Gloucester, said she was spurred to act after seeing news reports of retailers telling their employees to wish customers a "happy holiday," instead of "Merry Christmas," and schools forbidding everything from Christmas plays to Santa Claus.
"Christmas has been declared politically incorrect," Davis told colleagues on the House floor. "Any sign or even mention of Christmas in public can lead to complaints, litigation, protests and threats. America's favorite holiday is being twisted beyond recognition."
Her resolution, if adopted, would put the House on record as supporting the use of Christmas symbols and traditions, while opposing "attempts to ban references to Christmas."

Every rep. supporting that resoliution should be voted out.
The House has nothing better to do than vote on supporting Christmas????
Says alot about the right and the left.
Very nice sentiment. Now, could the House do something, please about illegal immigration and cut down on spending just a bit? That would be nice.
This kind of bill is worthless. It will accomplish nothing, and wastes the House's time.
Get down to work, please, Congresscritters!
Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y, asked Davis to amend her resolution to include symbols of other holidays, such as Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, but Davis refused.
Waaahhhhhhhh!! Leave it to two buttheads from my state......
Get down to work, please, Congresscritters!
No, I kind of prefer when they don't do anything. That way they can't pass any more spending bills or taxes.
Why, I went to the shopping mall today & you'd have no idea Christmas was next week!
(/sarc off)
"Every rep. supporting that resoliution should be voted out.

Amen, brother.
Sadly, the GOP will use this "issue" to rally their conservative base, only to drop it after the New Year.
Kinda like the whole "gay marriage debate" of last fall, which has almost completely disappeared from political discussion after being used to get GOP members elected.
Our trade deficit is at an all-time high. Our borders are like Swiss Cheese. But hey - let's focus on Christmas symbols!! That'll get votes!!
"Thank goodness!
Why, I went to the shopping mall today & you'd have no idea Christmas was next week!

LOL!
Yeah, where's the Christian uproar over Christmas now being a 3-month long season starting in October, or the insidious materialism of this Christian holiday?
For the record, I have no problems with anything "Christmas" related...I just don't see this as a Congressional issue.
Personally, I think its kind of offensive that the politicians would stoop to this. Its like we're a bunch of children who will be satisfied by some meaningless statement.
Why? I wholeheartedly support voting in favor of this measure. Why should less than 4% of the population get away with ruining CHRISTmas for all us? By the way, it IS the celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ! Not some bland nameless set of holidays. In fact I would LOVE to see which DimWits or RINOs oppose the measure and which ones are in favor.
And YES, there is a culture war on Christmas as well as a war overall against Christianity.
As for the measure, you don't think Congress has better things to do? This is a waste of time and money.
We're in a culture war, so let's see who stands with us.
Congress has MUCH better things to do than pass a resolution that does nothing. For instance, how about passing funding to upgrade the levees in New Orleans before the break? If the city doesn't get funding, it might simply die.
And no, there isn't a "War on Christmas". Happy Holidays has been around for over 25 years, and this is just a boogeyman created by conservatives who want to sell some books.
Better than nothing. What this did was show the lie to the Democrat's latest strategy of "reaching out to Christians" in the next election. Democrats hate Christians and they had to oppose Christmas in front of everybody.
Do you really think so? :-)) That if the corrupt LA/NO incompetents don't get enough shakedown money to repair the levees and pocket the rest, the decadent city of NO might die? That would truly be a Christmas present / New Year's wish all rolled into one. We can only hope so!
And by the way, trying to put a halt to the attack on Christianity and Christmas would be one of the BEST things our cowardly Congress could do this year!
I don't know what planet you're from, but there is an unrelenting attack against Christianity and Christmas from the DimWits, liberals, left-wingers & atheists. Or are we just imagining the lawsuits by Michael Newdow against our pledge of allegiance for the words "under God" or the lawsuits against our currency for the phrase "In God we Trust" or lawsuits against the 10 Commandments? I think you're using the wrong username "conserv13". I don't know what you are but you're definitely not a conservative.
Read my post #19. Then you can bury your head back in the sand.
