Tancredo releases miscast terror data
Denver Post ^ | Dec. 14, 2005 | Anne C. Mulkern

Posted on 12/15/2005 2:28:09 AM PST by FairOpinion

Saying the data show the porousness of the nation's borders, Tancredo, R-Littleton, issued a press release titled: "51 Terrorism Suspects Crossed Border Illegally / Joint Terrorism Taskforces Report 51 Persons Arrested on Terrorism-Related Charges in Last Year."

In fact, none of the 51 people arrested from September 2004 through September 2005 were charged with terrorism offenses, according to officials from two divisions of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as well as the document released by Tancredo. Many were arrested on immigration violations.

"1) the intentional infliction or threatened infliction of severe physical pain or suffering"

I guarantee you that the UN, the World Court and (probably) U.S. courts as well would rule that playing loud music or keeping suspects awake for long hours is the "infliction of severe physical pain or suffering."

"(2) the administration or application, or threatened administration or application, of mind altering substances or other procedures calculated to disrupt profoundly the senses or the personality"

So we can't use "truth serum" when interrogating a recalcitrant terrorist who we know knows where and when their next target is or where the al Qaeda leaders are holed up?

McCain's bill is stupid, stupid, stupid.

In fact, none of the 51 people arrested from September 2004 through September 2005 were charged with terrorism offenses, according to officials from two divisions of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as well as the document released by Tancredo. Many were arrested on immigration violations.

And there is a reason for that:

1 - If we charged them with terrorism, we have to arrest them and put them in jail and give them a day in court, which we might lose.

2 - If we charge them with immigration violations, we can immediately remove them from the country and not worry about them committing terrorist acts here in the US.

3 - We know where we are sending them, and we can have people waiting in that country to monitor them, ect...

Tancredo's not wrong; DHS just wants you to believe that no terrorists have attempted to enter the country from Mexico.

Tancredo is following the Buchanan methodology (perfected by Pat and Bay Buchanan).
Take a conservative cause and bilk it for money and publicity

If you'd bothered to have read what Tancredo's press release stated, instead of accepted the MSM's accusations against a Republican congressman at face value, you would see that Tancredo stated everything that the Denver Post criticizes him for not stating...

The point is not that the men were convicted of terrorism in th US, but that they were identified as likely terrorists by Homeland Security, and were able to enter the US anyway. They then were picked up for unrelated crimes, at which time their terrorist designation was discovered.

I agree the subheadline on Tancredo's press release was poorly worded, but it was also adequately explained in the release.

Couldn't post this part could you? All this animosity towards Tancredo and his message tells me the OBL's on FR really are afraid of him.

Oh, pshaw.... What crap -- if you don't like Tancredo, you're an "OBL?" Silly, and stupid.

Actually, Tancredo's quote is positively damning -- of him. He's basically saying "I lied to make a point." The problem is that Tom seems to do that a lot -- and thus he chips away at the credibility of a real issue.

Tom should learn to shut up. As it is now, he's simply giving people a chance to dismiss a real problem as just "another one of Tancredo's rants."

You are right about Tanc's position. I have read articles that take that back to '99.

OTOH, you are missing the point about Tanc's position and what he has tried to do.

First off, as elected officials, Tanc and other members of the immigration caucus are entitled to their views and are entitled to promote their views in Congress.

That is where the problem is. Instead of trying to introduce, promote, and gain passage of legislation that he thinks is the best solution, all he has done is try to block other's solution.

There have been numerous bills by republicans, democrats, and several bi-partisan efforts. The republican leadership asked him numerous times to take a written positon but he always refused. This is why Kyl and Cornyn wrote the bill around Tanc's position. Even then, he twisted away from his earlier positions and finally introduced his even more unreasonable bill.

Now most people see this and say that Tanc is not interested in finding solutions, he is only interested promoting the conflict. It is only natural for people to assume that he is doing this because it helps his fundraising.

While on one hand he makes a big deal about terrorists coming in as illegal immigrants, in the same breath he votes to protect the terrorists.

Just like Bush?

White House, McCain agree on torture policy

His veto would have been embarassingly overridden, thanks to such "true conservatives" such as tom tancredo.

The suspects were investigated by federal terrorism officials because they came from "countries of interest," such as Iran, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria, the FBI said.

This is all I need to hear.

neither he nor a spokesman from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement could rule out any ongoing terrorism investigations involving any of the 51.

No doubt.
