STOCKHOLM, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Fire bombs were thrown at a polling station for the Iraqi parliamentary election in northern Stockholm overnight but did not ignite, a police spokesman said on Thursday.

"Somebody has thrown bottles with gasoline at the building, but they did not ignite," spokesman Fredrik Lindfors said. "They then disappeared on foot."

Sweden is home to many Iraqis who fled the country during Saddam Hussein's rule. The police said they had issued a nationwide alert and searched for the assailants using tracker dogs, but without success.

Security at the two polling stations in the greater Stockholm area has now been strengthened and the Swedish security police have been informed, Lindfors said.

It takes a real skill to build a defective Molotov cocktail.

Kista petrol bomb claimed by "al-Qaeda" group
A petrol bomb attack on an Iraqi election office in Stockholm has been claimed by a group which said it was close to Al-Qaeda, according a letter quoted by a Dagens Nyheter on Friday.

Early on Thursday, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a voting station in the Stockholm suburb of Kista hours before people across Iraq turned out to choose the first four-year term parliament since the downfall of former dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003.

The bomb did not explode and nobody was injured.

"A Swedish group claiming to be a branch of the terror network Al-Qaeda has claimed the attack on an Iraqi election office in Kista," DN said, adding it had received a letter from the group.

DN said that in the letter, written in Swedish and posted on Wednesday, the group said that Thursday's attack would be followed by others.

"To my knowledge, no similar attack has been committed in Sweden in Al-Qaeda's name. It's the first of its kind," terrorism expert Magnus Norrell told the paper
