Schwarzenegger looks to rebuild power
CSM ^ | Dec. 15, 2005 | Josh Burek

The celebrity California governor, gearing up for 2006 reelection bid, aims to craft a more centrist image.

Recover. Reform. Rebuild. As a bodybuilder, that was Arnold Schwarzenegger's method to sculpt eye-popping muscles. As a governor, it was his three-part plan to fix California. Now, it might be his prescription for political survival.

But revamping the Schwarzenegger agenda to reflect Democratic priorities is exactly what California Republicans fear most. "Hell hath no fury like a conservative scorned," says California Democratic Party Chairman Art Torres.

For now, Republican Party leaders are standing by their man. "He's done a great job for this state, and I think at present time we stand by that," says Duf Sundheim, chairman of the California Republican Party. "We hope that he retains his decision to [run again] as a Republican."

"The problem he ran into this year was that he emphasized the most conservative aspects of his agenda. The lesson Schwarzenegger learned is that he has to present himself in ideological balance." (Schnur, GOP strategist)

"Arnold needs to stay with us," says Mr. Jeffries. "And we need to stay with him."

A pretty balanced article.

Please note the comment by the Dem Chairman who is counting on the conservatives to sink Arnold and get a Dem elected.

Something all rational Republicans and conservatives should consider.

What do you know about rational and who are you to criticize?

AND a companion article:

Conservatives knew what they were getting with Schwarzenegger

Weakening Schwarzenegger through party infighting will only compound the damage Democrats have inflicted on the governor and all but assure a return to the bad old days of one-party rule in California. Then we'd all have good reason to hold our noses.

Arnold is a gun grabbing elitest... there is no way I'd support him for anything at any time. He should go back to making movies and leave the politics alone.

Duf Sundheim's response is why the Democrats have nothing to fear from the CAGOP here. It can be easily rolled over.

And you are going to wave a magic wand and make the californian voters elect a conservaitve, right?

The same voters who rejected some common sense propositions, which were in line with conservative ideas.

Then why did Arnold hire an extreme liberal Democrat activist as his COS? I suppose we should swallow higher taxes and more spending to help him get re-elected so we don't bring back the bad, bad bad days of one party rule in Calofornia. Yeah if I want a Democrat, I'll vote for one. I don't need to have a Governor who pretends to be one.

A couiple of party leaders still stand by him for now.

We've never had massive increases in budgets like we have had the last 2 years.

We then get taken for a ride as greens and gays are appointed at numbers approaching if not exceeding republicans much less conservatives.

Oh, that's right , "WE" won the Recall, huh? Got rid of Gray and now we have Gray 2 presiding... almost doubled our long term debt and about to be told we need to borrow even more ..

Good Lord, when will you and your ilk just leave this forum or at least come to your senses, you are nothing that you pretend to be, just like your Trojan Horse in Sacramento.

You need to put everything on a scale, the negatives on one side, the positives on the other side.

Everything considered Arnold's positives still outweigh the Dems by far. If you consider nothing else, he held the line on taxes, he tried to defang Prop. 98, which is a major cause of our budget problems, but the voters didn't support him.

Don't blame Arnold for the stupidity of the CA voters.

Very few of us here, if any at all, were opposed to the propositions. But Ah-nold surely has done NADA for Conservatives while in office. He's carried NADA, ZIP, ZILCH more Republicans into office during the past election. He does more to spit in the face of Conservatives since he's been in office and he keeps goose-stepping the state leftward on his watch (again, no wonder why he managed to depress turnout in key GOP areas on those ballot initiatives). Before you point to Tookie's execution as a "stellar achievement" for Ah-nold, many states with 'Rat Governors would've just as easily not stood in the way of his justified fate.

All cut from the same cloth... Anyone who thinks he or she has the right to deny me my rights is an enemy and will NOT get my vote... ever. I don't do the lesser of two evils thing.

First you say it's "Conservative's" fault, then you say it's CA voters fault, when is it ever Ah-nold's fault ?

"We hope that he retains his decision to [run again] as a Republican."

He not only is hoping... He's down on his knees to both A.S. and his "higher power!" He has no other "French Wing" of the Republican Party candidates besides Gerald Parsky himself!!! Ha Ha Ha!!!

The only way Arnold can hope to win is either A) The Dems nominate someone from the legislature, or B) He goes back to the only thing that has ever gotten him increased support - attack the legislature.

Even when he was at his lowest in poll numbers, the state legislature was ten points below. He should hold up their idiocy for everyone to see in commercial after commercial, and let loose the dogs of war.

Bustamante, Davis, Angelides are just SOOOO much better... (/sarcasm)

Leaving a wounded Davis in power to take the blame with a Republican bloc to preclude tax increases would have left us in a better position than electing Arnold.

He has been, if anything, worse than Davis.
