BOSTON (AP) - Investigators were searching for suspects in one of the city's bloodiest crimes in recent memory after four men were fatally shot in a basement that neighbours said had been set up as a music studio.
The dead were in their late teens and early 20s, authorities said.
Three men were found dead at the house and the fourth died at a hospital, police Supt. Bobbie Johnson said.
Johnson said witnesses told police they saw a heavy-set person fleeing the scene Tuesday night. Police said the people involved appeared to know each other, but Johnson would not comment further on possible suspects.
The killings happened in a neighbourhood that had been considered relatively safe, as Boston struggles with rapidly climbing murder rate. Late last month, the city recorded what had been its 66th homicide of 2005, surpassing the total for all of 2004.
Tuesday's killings were among the worst in Boston's recent history.
In 1995, four people were gunned down at a crowded restaurant in the city's Charlestown neighbourhood. In 1991, five men were shot execution style in a social club in the city's Chinatown neighbourhood.
U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan said last week that his office will increase federal prosecutions of suspects involved in gun and gang violence in Boston.
no neighborhood or home is safe in a lib gun control state

Hmmm, I wonder if they were rappers...
City Councilwomen Hennigan said this morning that she wants to put every single Bostonian with a gun in jail!
I heard this story this morning. The part that I noticed was the suspect was a heavy set person. No other description given, which probably means a minority.
you beat me to it..
The Globe will say they were about to get a recording contract and put their lives back together.
Naaah, string quartet.
No, it was a music studio.
I'm sure the citizens of Boston are sleeping much better after this pronouncement. Sure beats having the option of protecting yourself and your family by owning dangerous firearms. /sarc
You left out the mandatory "Was an honors student" who had beat the odds....
Heavy-set man fleeing the scene... Suge Knight is back!
Well, some neighbors can be severe music critics!
Naww... must of been in the Boston Symphony or Boston Pops orchestras./sarcasm off
The Herald story says three blacks and a white died. The Fat Boy is white. Happened near Fields Corner, which is mostly white.
Where did Yahoo get an AP story with the word: neighbourhood
Yes...THAT was MY thought.
Tookie Williams relatives?
No, it was a "music" studio.
Great minds think alike.
