What do you think about the big set of flowers up against the tombstone? One would think that either they would be completely in the shadow or that a shadow of whatever is lighting them so amazingly would be clearly visible behind them.
Good point. The photo was taken when the sun was low on the horizon; photographers call it "sweet light." There is definitely more than one, possibly three, fill lighting sources at work here.
Look at Cindy's hair. She has the proper highlighting for the sun's angle, yet her face if filled, as are the flowers. We may have an original photo with a bit of digital enhancement; but that shot can easily be made by someone who knows what they're doing.
When I shoot photos I usually have three flash heads working and a couple of reflectors to boot. You can confine the spread of the supplemental lighting with snoots or doors, resulting in lighting that guides the viewer's eyes through the photo.
