Exactly. Big Hollywood has been flipping normal America the bird for so long, we're finally flipping it back at them.
I saw this article on Drudge. Right above it was a headline reporting that "Brokedick Mountin'" was the leader in Golden Globe nominations.
"Brokedick" was a movie nobody wanted made. There is no audience for it. The movie was made because Hollywood wants to promote homosexuality, and to tarnish a dyed-in-the-wool American tradition.
Does that sound like an industry with "creativity and new ideas" that "listens to its audience"? No, it sounds like a propaganda factory that is completely out of touch with its consumers. Stockholders of these studios need to start housecleaning.
How come movies like Casablanca, The Big Sleep, Roman Holiday, Sabrina, Public Enemy, Little Ceaser, etc... which had low budgets (not counting the actors salaries) for special effects, were such great hits?
You wanna know why .... IT WAS THE STORY STUPID!!! These movies told a great story, a basic story about people and their wants/needs/desires/ambisions. Not all this fantisy make-believe garbage.
Go rent the Big Sleep or the Maltese Falcon for example ... the plot will have you on the edge of your see the whole movie. These movies make you THINK, not sit there like a bag of you-know-what.
Where are those movies where they said "Yeah, that's me. Sure, I was all of those things. And more! When Rocco talked, everybody listened! What Rocco said, went! Nobody was as big as Rocco!"
Mmyaaa Seee.
Hell! I never even walked out of "Revenge of the Sith" - another collosal waste of time and money.
Next question, is how they can continue to "lose" money, picture after picture, without going out of business?
One thing that is changing is the average moviegoer has much better information than they had only a few years ago. It used to be, you had to rely on the studio hype to determine if a movie is worthwhile. Now your average moviegoer can sit down at a computer and get five independent reviews of any movie they might want to see, complete with trailers and artwork, in less than a minute.
Case in point: The studio hype made Aeonflux look like a pretty cool movie, with lots of cool cult-graphic-novel buzz. Thirty seconds on Google reveals that Aeonflux is the worst movie anybody has ever seen.
Hollywood: Proudly biting the hand that feeds it for over 40 years.
The Island was a good pro-life movie.
We need more queer cowboy movies.
A quick look:
"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" - Part 4 of what is really a single grand 7-part story; positive & imaginitive take on "good vs. evil" with good winning.
"King Kong" - a classic remade _well_.
"Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" - First installment of a single grand 7-part story; positive & imaginative take on "good vs. evil" with good winning; Christian theme.
"Memoirs of a Geisha" - Not out yet (?); presumably a good story told well.
"Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" - Part 3, last installment, of a single grand 6-part story; positive & imaginitive take on "good vs. evil" with good winning.
"War of the Worlds" - a classic remade well.
"Wedding Crashers" - slapstick.
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" - a classic remade well.
"Cinderella Man" - title alone an instant total turn-off, few got past.
"Kingdom of Heaven" - PC historical fiction.
"The Island" - too bizzare.
"Stealth" - too bizzare (intelligent airplane gone bad?).
Funny: grand imaginative good-vs-evil multi-part epics, well-made remakes of classics, positive religious themes, and classic slapstick do well ... but PC, bizzare, and ill-named moves do badly. Now, what did Hollywood make more of? and, oddly, expected people to see?
My local Blockbusters sells current-release but previously viewed DVDs (in fine condition with a 30 day guarantee) at 2 for $20. We've got a nice TV and home theater setup in our very comfy family room, complete with fully stocked fridge, fireplace, pajamas and slippers, bathroom and pause switch.
There is just no comparison. We only go out to the movies when there is something seriously compelling out there.
Where's the Bruce Willis's, Mel Gibsons, and Arnold Schwarzeneggers of our generation? Ben Affleck? Heath Ledger? Give me a break.

Boycott Hollywood is working.
Americans: create your own entertainment and recreation.
Hey! I have an idea! Hollywood should do a movie about gay cowboys!
Dear Hollywood;
We will not pay to watch people whose anti-American views we despise. You keep insisting on shoving your depraved ideologies down our throats so just keep on sinking.
Agreed, but Hollywood produces sequels and remakes *because* they are fresh out of creativity and new ideas. Not to mention appealing storylines.
They'd rather bastardize old popular movies than think of anything new or appealing.
thisa seems like the stupidest reason ... don't the companies decide when to release on DVD? they otter wait longer
I think this is more attributable the increase in big screen HDTV screens, higher quality DVDs, and the proliferations of available DVD movies. Lets face it, a movie looks better on a plasma or LCD flat screen, and you can watch in your underwear.
