Gov. John Baldacci's re-election campaign on Monday tapped Jesse Connolly of Portland to manage the governor's bid to reclaim the Blaine House in 2006.
Connolly most recently helped engineer the defeat of Question 1, the high-profile effort to overturn the state's new gay rights law last November. Baldacci was a driving force behind the law during its trip through the Legislature.
"He has done of lot of good things in his four years, and I believe he deserves a second term. We will communicate that to the people of Maine," said Connolly, who will begin his new position on Jan. 1.
Connolly's resume also includes managing Democrat John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign in Maine.
Just 27 years old, Connolly is considered a young gun in Maine political circles based on his success in the past two election cycles, according to campaign watchers.
In November, 55 percent of Mainers opposed the gay rights repeal effort. In 2004, Kerry took 54 percent of the vote in Maine and won all four of the state electoral votes.
"[Connolly] certainly made a believer out of me," said Christian Potholm, a veteran Republican pollster and political scientist from Bowdoin College, citing Connolly's apparent ability to mobilize voters in key areas such as Lewiston in the defeat of Question 1.
But Republicans, buoyed by Baldacci's sagging poll numbers heading into the new year, say Connolly has a difficult task ahead of him.
"[Baldacci] has not been a leader," Mike Leavitt, executive director of the Maine Republican Party, said Monday.
"As an incumbent, he has certain inherent advantages, but I think he's going to have a hard time making his case to the Maine people," continued Leavitt, who faulted the administration for, among other things, failing to deliver effective tax reform.
Although voters generally pay little attention to the inner workings of a campaign, pundits said Connolly's involvement could help shore up support for Baldacci among some left-leaning voters, who remember both men's work on the gay rights issue. But what about the state's religious right, which is still stinging from the defeat of Question 1?
"They're probably not going to vote for [Baldacci] anyway," said University of Maine political analyst Amy Fried.
As it stands, there are three major Republican candidates for governor - state Sens. Peter Mills of Cornville and Chandler Woodcock of Farmington, and former U.S. Rep. Dave Emery.
Last week, Pat LaMarche of Yarmouth announced her intention to seek the Maine Green Independent Party nomination.
There are also several independents - including Jonesboro activist Nancy Oden - who have announced candidacies.
... in spite of it being voted down TWICE by the people, Baldo decides what is best for the state.
Has Baldacci solved Maine's health care problems yet, as promised?
Oh yes! If the people doesn't want it, but he does...............guess who wins? Great Democracy we have here. Gag!
Has Baldacci solved Maine's health care problems yet, as promised?
He still thinks Dirago is the best in the world. heh!
Vote Baldacci, and get your taxes raised yet again.
I am already starting to hear more Maine jokes, if you don't watch out they might soon outpace West Virginia jokes.
FMCDH(BITS)
Given the Baldaccivich / Connally leadership over the next term, Maine's two Senatorial Districts will henceforth be known as "Soddom" and "Gommorah".
I wonder which one our esteemed Snowe Queen will get to "Represent" / rule over?
Isn't it pretty much a given that the empirial "Gay rights" edict was maintained largely by major infusions of money from big out-of-state gay supremecy activist organizations?
No doubt they are already passing the hat around the country in the gay bars and bath houses for the Emperor Baldacci re-election fund.
Has anyone else heard rumors to the effect that said reelection war chest already contains over $4Mil?
I can't wait to see what sort of coranation gown they're going to make for him to wear to the big occasion..
Can you?
It seems that the Baldacci machine has found another rather lucrative constituency base (joining with the NEA, MEA, ACLU, ABA, and other leftist cabals too numerous to mention).
Add to that formidable alliance the well oiled commiocrat election fraud machine in this State, and the arrogant one only needs about 17% of the popular vote to get re-elected to a second term.
After which I seriously wonder if there will be a State of Maine left to govern at all.
But regardless; this next election is going to be a doozey - that's for sure!
The Baldacci (D-ME) Psalm or The future of Maine
Governor Baldacci is my shepherd. I shall not want.
He leadeth me beside still factories.
He showeth me empty stores.
He restoreth my doubt in government budgets.
He guideth me to the path of unemployment.
He annointeth the legislative budgetmakers, so that my tax burden runnethover my income.
He giveth in to the MEA agenda for schools which teach not the three Rs.
He giveth in to the enviros who maketh a National Park of my home.
He giveth me jobs waiting table on people From Away who can afford vacations.
Surely, poverty and hard living shall follow the Baldacci Administration and
I shall liveth in a trailer forever.
OMG! You're awful! LOL!
(Baldacci and Tom Allen) are big spenders of taxpayer dollars.
You know, I have found that just downloading and distributing their immigration voting records is effective in converting most Democrats I know to the Republican side.
People just didn't know--and they are often shocked. No one wants more of the same, not to mention more budget problems.
They have voted in every way possible for:
1. annual net immigration of 1.3 million poor, illiterate people from third world countries, who are overcrowding American schools, depressing wages for American workers, contributing to one-half of all sprawl, overwhelming American hospitals, and reproducing babies at rates 3 to 45 times the rate of Americans, not to mention fiscally breaking the backs of American state and local governments and the American taxpayers.
2. They have repeatedly voted to extend amnesty to illegal aliens (8 to 11 million of them in the country now).
3. They have repeatedly voted in support of H1B visas, displacing 1 million American technical workers and resulting in no job opportunities for recent American college grads. And they continue to support an increase in the number of h1B visas.
4. They have each played a major role in preventing any efforts brought about by members of Congress who, in accordance with the wishes of 70% of the American people, sought to bring about even the slightest immigration reform in terms of lower refugee and immigrant numbers.
5. They have repeatedly voted in favor of chain migration, where the elderly, social-security-collecting parents, husbands, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, married children and so on, are guaranteed entry into America consequent to one migrant. (the young working chinese have turned social security into a commodity industry for their elderly parents)
6.They have voted for automatic citizenship for any child born to illegal immigrants on American soil. This has resulted in foreign businesses where pregnant women from poor countries like China and Africa pay to be flown here just when they're about to deliver.
And then there is the Somali situation in Lewiston.
What a coward is Mr. Baldacci.
Do ya think _ _ _ contains enough calories to put some meat (pardon the expression) on the Walking Cadavers lithe, sexy frame?
No commento! hehe!
I have spent my summers since I was a boy vacationing near what recently became MBNA territory, which settled in around Camden, Lincolnville, and Belfast. A perfect industry to have in a state with transportation problems.
When MBNA moved in to midcoast Maine, it was probably the biggest gain in high-paying jobs that Maine ever had since the Depression. It turned the whole town of Belfast around.
But Baldacci managed to drive them out again.
Well, he is disgusting. And word gets around about him, so no wonder no business's want to move in to Maine.
From the looks of him, he needs to solve his own health problems. Looks like he just came from Auschwitz .
