SB-403, Personal Protection Act, Wisconsin Assembly, live debate thread, 12/13/2005

| Senator ZIEN, Representative GUNDERSON,
Posted on 12/13/2005 6:20:02 AM PST by Monitor
Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly debates SB-403:
"This bill creates a licensing system under which an individual is permitted to carry a concealed weapon under certain circumstances. The bill also makes certain changes in Wisconsin law to account for a federal law that requires the state to permit an individual who works as or who has retired from working as a federal, state, tribal, or local law enforcement officer in Wisconsin or in any other state to carry a concealed firearm under certain circumstances. In addition, the bill changes the law relating to background checks for handgun purchases to require the Department of Justice (DOJ) to determine whether a person seeking to purchase a handgun has been subject to an order or finding regarding his or her mental health that makes the purchase unlawful."

BTW, two years ago when it was argued that cops would be in danger from CCW permit holders, I spent an evening digging around to find out if these fears had any foundation in reality. This is the
only case I found:
A check of the Million Mom Marchs collection of articles on crimes committed by CCW holders listed only three police officers being injured by gunshot wounds delivered by a single CCW holder ("Suspect No Stranger to Guns, Explosives"; Hartford Courant, September 4, 1998). All three officers survived. Of note is that the CCW holder was a former police officer.

Interesting. That reaches the 2/3 majority that we'd need for an override.

"... CCW holder was a former police officer."Somewhere along the line I read that the only time someone was shot with a registered "machine gun" it was wielded by a police officer. Maybe we just need to take the guns away from police officers. ;)

Sherman's may issue comment sounds to me like he might go for an override this time. Also, Doyle's time is up.

One attack event on LE and, "Of note is that the CCW holder was a former police officer." No doubt the mommies dug that out and put it in a prominent place on their homepage.

Got to find the numbers because this seems to come up over and over again. But the number of CCW who lose their permits is miniscule and usually over non-gun-related offenses, like a new history of drunken driving.
I think it's time fer bed.
