Is that why Christian education is now available in all Russian schools and the military?

Sounds just like what Bush, Cheney, Rice and Powell keep saying. Either way it is BS.

Agreed.

At first I thought it was just Bush who was naive, but since I see the people in the administration around Bush pretty much with the same line, I figure they can't all be uniformed and naive; so I suspect there is an agenda here about Islam that we won't be privy to.

Pres.Bush did the right thing in Afghanistan and Iraq and I support him in those efforts.

Bush just can't seem to name the enemy. It is the religion itself-Islam. - Tom

I don't think its naive, on either side. It's the stupidity of the West trying to play the islamics off on each other while in truth, the Islamics take the patronage and play the West off on each other. Who's the wiser? Definitly not the Christian world, sadly.

Russian patriarch, Iranian parliamentary speaker discuss interfaith dialogue 9:27 | 12/ 12/ 2005

MOSCOW, December 12 (RIA Novosti) - The head of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Iranian parliamentary speaker met in Moscow Monday to discuss interfaith dialogue.

Patriarch Alexy II and Islamic Consultative Assembly Chair Gholam-Ali Haddad-adel praised the work of the joint Russian-Iranian commission for Islamic-Orthodox dialogue. Alexy II said it was "an exemplar of mutually beneficial cooperation" proving that "together, we can counter attempts to impose secular values all over."

"I believe Orthodox Christians and Muslims are united in their desire to prevent the construction of a unipolar world order, which would enable the imposition of certain political and cultural patterns across the globe," the Russian patriarch said.

Russia has a long history of supporting Islamic states to make trouble for the U.S. and Britain. At the same time, they have a long history of suppressing Muslim states along their own borders.

In this regard, Russia and France have very similar foreign policies and are closely allied on the Security Council. They both loved Saddam and his oil.

In some countries, national pride is based on the ability to expand and to annex other countries to serve the "Mother" country (WWII Nazi Germany, for example). Within such kind of national pride, defense (defense systems against incoming missiles, for one) will be publicly called offense, and offense (more large offensive nuclear weapons) can publicly be called defense. And such countries will ally with terrorist regimes in order to try to carry out expansionist goals.

It would be much better, IMO, if most of the politicians and party followers of the Russian government could see us as friends, but maybe that's not possible through the eyes of hard nationalists who desire power more than goodness.

But without nuclear materials, our anti-ballistic missile defense pieces are potentially far less expensive to manufacture and stage than are more offensive nukes being aimed at us.

Russia hopes to join the Organization of the Islamic Conference - 06/28/2005 - "We proceed from the basis that international terrorism and religious extremism have nothing in common with Islam," Yakovenko. The spokesman continued that Russia and the Muslim world were "not only partners but strategic allies" in the fight against international terrorism and religious extremism.

ISLAM RELIGION OF PEACE: RUSSIAN-SAUDI FORUM - 05/29/2005 - "We must make one point clear: we cannot divide the world either on the ideological principle, as was the case during the Cold War, or on the religious-to fall into Muslims and non-Muslims. The sequences of such a division are very dangerous," said Primakov.

Russia supports new international alliance - foreign minister - 11/10/2005 - During his Monday visit in Spain, Lavrov confirmed Russia's support for a Turkish-Spanish initiative to create an Alliance of Civilizations, which is designed to foster mutual respect for religious beliefs and traditions, along with stepping up cooperation between the Christian West and the Muslim East in the fight against terrorism and extremism. Lavrov said the new alliance would rely on Unesco's experience in bringing countries with different ideologies together and coordinating the work of non-government organizations.

Russia welcomes OIC aid to restore normal life in Chechnya - "We would welcome the contribution of your states in carrying out projects for the Chechen Republic that are being implemented through UNESCO." Russia and the OIC "act from close positions on issues connected with opposing the worst threats and challenges of the 21st century such as international terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction". "These global challenges require collective efforts on the part of the entire world community, supported by the UN and international law," the minister said.

I hope US learns 'Iraqi lessons': Putin - "We have repeatedly called our American partners' attention to this reality. Putin Wants U.N. to Take Lead in Iraq

The Primakov Doctrine -- The Missing Link between Russia and Iraq? - By promoting this multipolar model, Primakov is attempting to dilute American international power. His version of multipolarity also provides cover for a Russian-Chinese strategic partnership which may welcome the Islamic Republic of Iran as a junior partner. Such a coalition could challenge the United States in two vital regions: the Persian Gulf and the Taiwan Strait. In addition, Primakov wants an exclusive Russian sphere of influence in the Caucasus and Central Asia. He claims that CIS countries must integrate with Russia; he supports union with Belarus; and he advocates Russia's use of force in the former Soviet region.

RUSSIA'S ARMS DEAL WITH IRAN: KREMLIN BELIEVES U.S. TOO WEAK FOR STRONG RESPONSE - 12/09/2005 - The Kremlin leadership sees the Bush administration's ill-starred Middle East adventure as a kind of "moment of truth" in international affairs. This idea is clearly expressed in a lengthy paper written by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov for Diplomaticheskii ezhegodnik-2005 and posted on the ministry's official website.

First, it has been proved that America is not a hegemon in the unipolar world, Lavrov asserts. In reality, he notes, the world is multipolar one and "practically all nations, including the leading ones, proceed from this fact in their foreign policy."

Second, the U.S. failure in Iraq appears to reveal the flawed nature of almost everything in American foreign policy that the Kremlin holds to be objectionable: unilateralism, boundless hubris, disregard for international organizations, reliance on raw force, bullying of opponents, and spreading of democracy through fomenting "color revolutions." The course of events in Iraq has led to the destruction of "many myths," Lavrov writes, and he suggests that the "post-Iraq period in global politics" will be more predictable.

In his essay, Russia's top diplomat openly challenges U.S. policy toward Iran. There are already two large unresolved conflicts in the Middle East, Lavrov points out, adding that escalation and the possible destabilization of Iran as well as of Syria -- another usual target of Washington's sharp criticism -- will only lead to the broadening of the "zone of instability." Tehran should be "engaged," not "isolated," Lavrov contends. This policy recommendation runs contrary to the line that the United States suggests the international community should take vis-à-vis Iran. "Our view is that Iran needs, in essence, to be isolated," Undersecretary Burns argued in his Moscow interview.

Emboldened by America's perceived weakness and its newly forged strategic ties with the rising eastern giants China and India, the Kremlin feels comfortable enough to recognize that its own -- and presumably its powerful allies' -- vision of the new world order differs markedly from that of the United States. Russia's optimism appears to rest on the leadership's sense that the country is an ascendant power. As Lavrov's essay asserts, "We are on the side of history."
