Illegal Alien Day Laborers in Shirlington
Times Community Newspaper ^ | 11/22/2005 | Kali Schumitz

Tobar estimated that, at the Shirlington center, an average of half the people seeking work there have some type of legal immigration status.

Perhaps this has been discussed already, but I couldn't find any references to it in past threads.

Why has there not been more outrage and response to the use of taxpayer money to support the Shirlington Employment & Education Center? This 501(c)(3) organization is supported in part by an Arlington County Community Development Block Grant. Yet it facilitates breaking of the law by promoting hiring of illegal immigrant day laborers.

The reaction in Herndon has been a bit stronger. But the SEEC in Shirlington seems to have slipped in under the radar.

For example, the Minutemen have been active in reporting employers in Herndon. See details here.

WETA had a reaction - they were outraged that the undocumented immigrants they're so in favor of would dare to congregate in THEIR upscale neighborhood. Where exactly are they hanging out? That store at the opposite end from Carlyle Grand?

The Arlington County-supported location is near the intersection of Shirlington Road and South Four Mile Run Drive.

When traffic is horrible on I-395 I get to work by taking Shirlington Rd and turn onto Four Mile Run. It is not uncommon for them to try and flag me down. I am not sure what makes them think that I am looking for workers, the last time I checked most people seeking day labor are not wearing a coat and tie and driving a Lexus. Then again, for what I am paying my contractor, he should.

They're also all over the the New Home Depot on Rhode Island Ave in the District. Bleeding hearts are urging Home Depot to supply facilities for them to sit in warmth with bathrooms and water fountains.

right next to the Beenie Weenie. Its quite a scene when a truck rolls up looking for help. The job aspirants mob the trucks. They'll actually tear the doors open and jam into the vans and won't get out unless forced by the driver. Pretty scary, not sure why "employers" would put up with that, even in the tight labor market here.

Turns out even the day laborers in Shirlington are pulling down $10-15/hr for unskilled labor.

WOWWWW-- Don't scare me like that. I saw that headline, "ILLEAGLE ALIENS DAY" and thought; Are they going to create them a HOLIDAY like Ceasar Chavas?

It is directly across the street from the Weenie Beenie carryout. You can usually find, or at least you used to find them in the parking lot of Weenie Beenie.

Although I have never employed those folks, my observation has been that they are nice people doing jobs that no body else will do, and they are feeding their own families.

Flame away.

It's not the "nice folks" who are the problem, really. It's the employers who break the law and avoid paying taxes on the wages of the illegals. If there were no employers willing to break the law (and just a little ENFORCEMENT of existing law), few would risk coming here illegally.

And you can tell this just by looking at them? You mean they are not wearing there "I am a rapist" t-shirts so that we can tell the good ones from the bad ones?

If there are 11 million illegals then they represent about 3% of our 300 million total population. Yet they make up almost 30% of our Federal prison population.

I am sure that the majority of these 11 million people are fairly decent (although they are willing enough to break our immigration laws, our employment laws, our tax laws, our traffic laws and commit identity theft/fraud) but the fact remains, their over-representation in our prisons suggests that they are ten times more likely to commit a serious offense then a citizen.

No, I have met quite a number of Central Americans, and I like them. In fact, first impressions have worked well for me, and I'll bet I wouldn't like you.

Oh yuk. I used to live on Four Mile Run.

No. VA is being overrun with illegals and this nonsense about providing them with "safe" places to look for work is insane.

Whatever happened to shipping all their asses back to where they came from and beefing up the border so that they can't get back here, as well as keeping others from getting here.?

You want to see crazy? Go to Manassas and see how many there are in all the stores, restaurants, etc. Manassas must be their community to live in - to work for contractors, taking those jobs that they've pushed down to peanuts such that Americans can't afford to do that work.

Last niter I went to Safeway here in Nor-Cal and waited in the checkout behind two Hispanics who could barely speak a word of English.

They had two shopping carts full of goods. Dozens of eggs, juices, milk, bricks of cheese, tortilla, flour, beans, meat etc etc etc...tons of stuff.

I asked them if they had a really big family or did they own a tiende...

Both the women said in broken English...though I had asked the question in Spanish.

Oh...I said.

When it came time to check out the couple paid with a combination of cash, food stamps and a plastic food stamp debit type card.

11.31 was paid in cash, 130.00 was put on the food stamp debit card, and the balance was paid with food stamps.

SO HERE IS HOW IT WORKS:

Gain entry into the country, bring or have a huge family with as many members as possible living under one roof. Have everyone sign up for food stamps and handouts.

Use the government goody payout to purchase goods to run an all cash business like a burrito joint or roach coach. Screw the taxpayers who finance your operation by employing the family that lives with you...and pay them or yourself cash and just keep breaking even...

I JUST ABOUT VOMMITTED LAST NIGHT WHEN I FIGURED OUT WHAT THESE SCUM BAGS WERE DOING.

Meanwhile my steak, salad goods, cheese, wine and milk came to about 35 bucks...

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

Because in the "new America" things are going as planned.

Interesting that you can tell you like Central Americans just by looking at them but you can tell you don't like a Cuban (that's me) just by reading one post.

I generally try to judge people on the basis of their actions, intelligence and character rather than their ethnic heritage but that is just me.
