THE Australian army is gearing up to be part of the Summernats festival for the first time in the event's 19 years, when it unleashes a new recruiting tool on the rev-head crowds at the annual motoring festival. Army chief Lieutenant General Peter Leahy hopes the custom-built high performance seven-litre supercharged Landrover called "Armygeddon" will draw a crowd and hopefully boost army ranks.

"Well we've looked at Summernats over the years, it's a great national event and a lot of young men and women go out there," he said.

"So I think in that sort of environment at the Summernats we might just see a few recruits."

Lt Gen Leahy said the army was in need of skilled plumbers, electricians and mechanics and Summernats might just be the place to find them.

"It's about working our image amongst that crowd, the young crowd, the adventurous people, those with technical skills," he said.

"And say right-o this is what you can do in the army."

Lt Gen Leahy then unleashed the rev-head within when he talked about "Armygeddon" the six by six Landrover with extensive high performance modification.

"We've got a fantastic vehicle there. Seven litres, supercharged, 700 horsepower," he said

"We're going to enter some of the competitions, we've got some people training up to be drivers.

"We think we're going to get a great return for the recruiting and it's well worth the money we've put into it."

Summernats promoter Chic Henry, an ex-army apprentice himself, said "Armygeddon" was a great tool to show people what could be achieved with an army apprenticeship.

"When General Leahy approached me thinking about building a special vehicle to promote people joining the army to do a trade I understood exactly what he was talking about," he said.

"And when he told me what sort of vehicle he wanted to build I was even more interested.

"The Summernats is a great opportunity to talk to young people about career opportunities."
