It's not the conservative movement that has reached a dead end, but you could argue that the Republican Party has.

Do citizens in this society, whose economy offers so many choices, want choices in their public services?

Looks like it will take the next generation to bring this one about.

Nothing at all in the article about social conservative issues. Without bringing back morality and decency to America, everything else he talks about don't matter a hill of beans.

Voters have installed Republican majorities in Congress and a Republican president widely regarded as a conservative. Yet federal spending has risen sharply, and a new federal entitlement, for prescription drugs, has been added.

That's because what got elected wasn't conservative. Duh.

"..The draft military, which performed poorly in Vietnam"

What? I think there are about a half million dead North Vietnamese and Viet Cong that beg to differ. The military did fine, it was Washington, the left and RINOs that undercut, backstabbed and did lousy.

That's because they're not Conservative. They like to pretend, until after the vote is cast. They are politicians, through and through. Blackbird.

As Rush would say, Crack down, not crack up.

Conservatism is not dead by a long shot. This country is inherently conservative.

American culture, so conformist-minded 50 years ago, has become more variegated, with individuals free to choose the cultural niche in which they live and raise their families. American society, which seemed headed toward collectivism a half-century ago, now seems headed back toward the democratic individualism Alexis de Tocqueville identified in the 1830s.

In such a society, conservatives need not look solely to the federal government to accomplish their political ends. The great conservative policy successes of the 1990s -- the reduction by more than half of crime and welfare dependency -- were the product of state and local politicians, inspired by conservative thinkers, far more than they were of any federal law.

The problem with conservatism is not conservatism but that conservatism has never been really tried.

I like Barone, but the problem the conservatives have are with RINOS and Dem obstuctionists in the Senate. The Bush man is more moderate than he is conservative, ie spending, prescription drugs, immigration.

I think what the Republican Party and/or conservatives, is missing is an articulate spokesman or woman. Last week on December 7 - Pearl Harbor Day - is a perfect example. There should have been a major speech by one of our guys, linking Pearl Harbor and 9/11 together. And as much as we like Fox News, ever since 9/11, they never show reel footage of the attacks. During WW II, we were reminded constantly that there was a war going on, who attacked us, and why we were fighting. I listen to the snippets of Bushes radio speeches and he sounds so uninspired. This constant backtracking by the administration when the Dems cry foul on any issue is rather sickening.

Looking at the YTD totals on my paystub the other day, I don't feel like I'm living in a conservative country. More like a largely socialist one, where 50% of my earnings are taken by government, the majority of which is transfered to others rather than paying for constitutionally authorized functions. And what if I wanted to chose to retire earlier, live a more comfortable life, travel, start a business or give more to charity? Those choices are taken away when I pay so much in taxes.

Because not all problems have been solved, or solved in a way certain people would like them solved, then they run around screaming "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"

Of course we should always strive to do better, but 'better' does not include 'conservatives' running around saying "conservatism is dead." That's one sure way to LOSE the hearts of the American people, not to gain them.

After the implosion of the Democrat party into about 22 factions, Conservatives can split off from the Republican party.
