I'd be grateful for any recommendations on a gun safe. I have a couple of long guns and a handgun, and want to keep them beyond reach of kids. Thanks very much
I have an AMSEC LP6032 that I highly recommend.
I'll be interested in the replies on this one as well. Burglars often take guns if they see them, so if you have some nice ones, it pays to protect 'em.
Pinging Dr. Muttly for all things pertaining to firearms
But why?
Use the safe for your single shot .410 shotgun a bolt action .22 and a muzzleloader. For the good stuff, keep it under a well oiled flower bed.

3 pieces of info needed:
1. budget
2. space available
3. Location (apartment / house) etc
Choosing a gun safe that will keep children out is easy...even the cheap ones will do that...
More importantly, don't forget to "gun proof" your kids....
Teach them about the weapons, safe handling techniques and get them to the range....Mine started at 5 years old...
My oldest (daughter) was on the USAFA NCAA rifle team and is now on the combat pistol team....
Intentionally, when they were little, I would leave a "unloaded" weapon out on a counter, kitchen table, etc.
Each time the weapon was very carefully positioned so even the slightest movement could be detected. Then my wife and I would wait to see which of the kids would report it and not touch it....
Make them gun safe.....
I keep all pistols in a Gun Vault. Very happy with it.
If you just want to keep the guns away from kids, get a school locker with a good lock.
If you want to keep them safe from most burglars, get a heavy gunsafe and lag it to the floor and wall. About $300 (Sentry, etc.).
If you also want to keep the guns safe from fire, you'll have to spend $500-$600 for a small insulated(10-14 gun safe).
You can certainly spend more, but the above choices will get the job done economically.
Cute.
Thanks for your questions.
Budget -- not sure what's reasonable. I didn't spend a fortune on the guns, and want the safe only to keep the kids safe. I'll pay what's necessary for that, but that's the only reason I want one.
Space available -- plenty, though how big it is will influence where I put it. I'd prefer to have the guns accessible from our bedroom, which means the safe's got to fit in my bedroom closet. Could go in basement, where there's plenty of room.
Location -- old house in northeastern suburb
I've got 3 of the Sentry Fourteen Long Gun safes. Haven't had a problem with any of them. You can get them with combination or electronic locks.
Built like Ft. Knox w/ case hardened 12GA steel, interior is configurable, can change the combination, built-in bolt-down holes, my model looks like a piece of furniture.
Also, my patrol car uses an AMSEC trunk safe, so I have used their products for awhile.
Any other questions?
Check your local Home Depot. This time of year they usually stock a few safes. I picked one up a few years ago and it works great. It's a Sentry and can handle 10 long guns and a couple of pistols. They sell for $300 or $350.
I don't understand why y'all would keep your guns unloaded or locked away in a safe. What good will it do you or your family if you're fast asleep, only to be awaken by a murderer standing over you? Are you going to ask him for permission to go get your weapon?
I have a Liberty brand, about 700 lbs, painted with an S&W front....but just only because that's what they had. Get bigger than you think you will need, cuz you'll end up putting files and stuff in it, though you don't think you will!
I love it. Had it for 10 yrs. Hinge and combo lock action super smooth.
"I don't understand why y'all would keep your guns unloaded or locked away in a safe."
Because there are these people called "burglars" who break into houses and steal things.
