Jeanine Pirro is expected to quit her bid to unseat Sen. Hillary Clinton as early as tomorrow, prematurely ending what had been billed as one of the nation's marquee races. Just a few months ago, the smart, aggressive and charming Westchester district attorney was the darling of a Republican Party convinced she was the right candidate who - even if she couldn't beat Clinton - could at least slice into her high approval ratings.
But now, Pirro, 54, is being written off as the first political roadkill of the 2006 election season. And Clinton never even had to throw a punch.
What happened?
"She's been hurt by a lack of money and a campaign that from the beginning has been sputtering at best," said Marist College pollster Lee Miringoff.
Pirro, he said, also fell into the trap of making a central issue of her campaign that Clinton harbors presidential ambitions and won't finish a second term, a claim that, even if true, doesn't seem to matter much to most New Yorkers.
GOP insiders said they expect her to toss in the towel tomorrow when Republican leaders meet in Albany to gear up for next year's elections, which also feature races for governor, state attorney general, Congress and all 212 state lawmakers.
Officially, her campaign says Pirro has no plans to quit, but sources said she will be "drafted" to run for attorney general, a job for which many of her backers say she is well qualified given her background as a prosecutor and former judge.

Well, you told me ! (I'm an amateur) ;-)
"she never really ran a campaign."
That sums up why she never got off the ground. So this leaves us with ex-Yonkers Mayor John Spencer. Spencer is a fine man, but not of the caliber to unseat the Hildabeast. But he still deserves support.
He's kind of like the late Ray Shamie, who ran against Ted Kennedy in 1982. If given proper support, he could hold her margin to less than expected and force her to spend funds she'd otherwise use towards a Presidential campaign.
the downstate congressman - Peter King or Vito Focella - would also make a race out of it.
there are a few pro-life and pro-gun Dems.
all I am saying is, in states where you need to "moderate" - it should not be ruled out. I am not suggesting that a senate candidate for Texas be pro-choice, or that a senate candidate trying to unseat a Dem in a state that Bush won (Montana or the Dakotas for example) should be a moderate. You have to pick your spots and take a shot in states that would otherwise elect a Dem solidly.
I think its time we haul in some big guns - how about Shaun Hannity running against the Hildabeast? He lives in NY right? Fox could get a man "inside the senate" for a change and really get the scoop out ahead of the old MSM!
don't tell me that the demographics in these states are not changing - they are. its not just the "party" apparatus.
long island, where I live, used to have a solid group of republican congressman. they have all been tossed out for Dems, only one (Peter King) is left. they lost not because they were RINOs, or because the party "screwed" them - they lost because the demographics of the districts changed, they didn't appeal to and get enough votes, the Dem challengers did and were elected.
IS DICK MORRIS AN IDIOT?
OR IS HE STILL ON THE CLINTON PAYROLL?
no, but the idea of the NY GOP pulling an "Arnold" is not a bad one. the thing is, I don't know what celebrity is available in NY for such a run, under the republican banner. probably no one. but the idea is still a good one, imagine a Bruce Willis or Mel Gibson type candidate running against Hillary. we need a candidate that will get alot of media attention - since Hillary is more a celebrity then a politician.
Was there ever a question?
I can't imagine Pirro debating Hillary
Well then, what can I say - you think like Hillary.
run for Senator against Hilly in 2000
You right, it things were on the up and up. The powers that be said - run someone that no one knew (except LI) so the missus would not have any strong opponent. They are doing it again w/Pirro. Pataki is using his influence to help the missus - advice to Pirro - we need you for attorney general plus she may have been told you won't get our support if you do run against the missus. Dirty game being played out behind the scenes and in the media to help the screaming missus.
I agree 100%. As wouldntbprudent said on another thread, you have to "go to the war with the army you have," as Rummy says.
It's better to take what you can get, in areas of the country that are not likely to vote for a conservative Republican.
Cox is a white shoe firm lawyer, who has never run for any elected position and is Nixon's son-in-law.
Spencer, the Mayor of Yonkers, is only slightly better than that and both aren't as good as Lazio.
Ruddy isn't going to run against her...again. He's now making pits of money in the private sector and being one of 50, instead of THE one ( mayor, governor, president ) won't seduce him away from his lucrative businesses.
If everyone and his uncle hadn't gone after Pirro, the minute she announced, she might not have beaten Hillary, but she would have wounded her quite badly and she's the ONLY one who could have done that. Pirro is being offered the AG spot, because she CAN win it hands down and the N.Y.GOP has nobody else to run. But, she doesn't want that job. So, would YOU run hard for a job you really don't want and were coerced into running for?
As far as Pirro and the AG is concerned, I see it this way.....she either won't run for it, or she runs 1/2 heartedly and loses.
Both? :-)
"Pataki couldn't win an election for dog catcher, right now, and he wouldn't lay a glove in Hillary, if he ran against her."
Do you read the N.Y. Post daily?
If the answer to those questions is ye, then WHY don't you know what's been going on since Jeannine announced and how low in the pols that Pataki has been for years now?
Pataki and his wife, have their own, continuing BAD PRESS woes. Pataki put EVERYONE to sleep, when he spoke at the GOP presidential Convention in '04. He's done nothing but cave to the Dems in Albany for years now. And against Hillary, he'd be far less effective than Lazoi was and Lazio lost!
Not only isn't Pataki NOT the same man who beat Mario, there were so many things going against Mario, at that time, that do NOT come into play now, as to make your head spin. And then there is the Hillary tactic of playing THE VICTIM, when running against a man. She can and WILL say and do anything, but woe unto any male, who tries to treat her as an "equal".
The DNC writing your talking points against Jeanine, or just the N.Y.Times? You're repeating all of them.
Jeanine's problem with raising money and very badly run campaign is Pataki's pal, Kieran Mahoney's mess; as well as Pirro's husband...who is a meddler. And no, nobody knows WHY Jeanine has allowed this to happen.
I am NOT giving her an "out"; I am stating how I see things unfold, should they pressure her to bolt and run for the AG spot. She was asked, a multitude of times, just prior and after she announced the Senate try, if she would do the state AG run/why she didn't go for the AG spot. Her answer was a consistent one...she did NOT want to do that; not now, not ever!
And you're wrong about Pirro being a "nobody". She is very well known in N.Y. and has appeared on cable shows VERY often, talking about putting the "baddies" away.
Actually, your entire post is wrong and filled with some rather strange statements, which are not "facts".
