I beleive Churchill said something like:

"A man of twenty and not of the liberal persausion hath no heart, a man of forty and not of the conservative persuasion hath no head!"

But back in those days much of what is called "liberal" was is now called "conservative". A classical liberal believes in limited government, personal liberty, and free markets. I don't see the socialists who mislabel themselves as liberals favoring those concepts. Old fashioned 18th century style conservatives have much more in common with them.
