Ben Johnson recalled, an instructor told him and other recruits, "If you ever see somebody carrying a gun, turn and run away as quickly as possible."

You might submit this to the "Bang List" as humor.

but opponents suggest it would just lead to more gun crime.

Must be the same 'opponents' that say that fighting terrorist leads to more terrorism.

I wouldn't blame them a bit. I'd run, too. Still, a government entity designed to fight armed criminal activity not being equiped with the tools to do so? It's truly unbelievable, right out of a joke or comic strip.

The world has changed and so has Britain. This thinking needs to be adopted to modern circumstances for the safety of the brave men and women who protect the British people, further enabling them to do the job they were meant to do.

Now will you all please join me in a round of "Brave Sir Robin..."?

"Runnn Awaaaayyyyy!"

"I don't think it's working."

"Shall we run away some more?"

I'm laughing just thinking about this movie. Do you think my 8YO would enjoy watching the movie with me yet or should I wait? I think he'll appreciate the visuals, and he's going to watch 5,000 times anyways...

supporters argue that British police need guns to protect themselves, but opponents suggest it would just lead to more gun crime.

Are opponents suggesting that arming police would result in the police committing gun crimes?

Otherwise, that statement makes absolutely no sense, whatsoever.

They don't know what they are saying.

Johnson said his decision was sealed by last month's death of unarmed officer Sharon Beshenivsky, a mother of three, killed as she responded to an alarm at a travel agency in the city of Bradford. She was the second police officer to be fatally shot in the past five years; in the same period two officers were stabbed to death and at least 44 were injured by firearms, according to government statistics.

The United Kingdom has a population of only 60,441,457 (July 2005 est.), that includes Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It won’t be long before Merry Old England surpasses the US in line of duty gunshot deaths/100,000.

According to the FBI, 54 were shot to death and 48 were killed in traffic accidents in 2004. Maybe they should cut back on the number of LEOs driving cars? England might go for it.
